In 1999 The Rolling Stone magazine (German issue) put on a tour with three “newcomer” bands they thought would be the “next big thing”. These three equally estimated bands were: Gay Dad, Ben Folds Five and Travis. Guess what? Well, to cut a long story short: We never ever heard of Gay Dad again, Ben Folds Five never made it big in Germany… And Travis? … had just released “The Man Who”… So, coming back to this particular Roadshow in Cologne: I have to admit that I felt a little pity for Gay Dad and Ben Folds Five because nobody really paid attention to their gigs. It was like they were only the support bands for Travis. They def were the headliner everybody was waiting for! Whilst people were busy meeting their friends and chatting around loudly instead of concentrating on the music before – as soon as Travis entered the stage the main hall was packed and everybody was listening! If one was wondering why this noisy crowd bought the tickets in the first place: You could now watch the audience enthusiastically sing along every single line of every single song Travis played! It was amazing! If I would not have been a Travis fan from the “Good Feeling” start in 1997 anyway: this fantastic concert would have convinced me to become a fan for sure! Actually, I must mention that I was still remembering the show as a “Travis concert” and had totally forgotten about the two other bands playing this evening before I looked it up in my calendar to get the details right for this review…
