Got to bed last night at a ridiculous hour after travelling from the gig in Hull.
My own bed. Didn't feel the same without my baby. Woke up this morning to an interview with George Bowie, a DJ for Clyde FM (a Glasgow radio station).
Then it was into a car and off to Finchley Road to a photoshoot for Melody Maker. Anton Brooks met us there. Anton is our pressman. He's worked with loads of bands most importantly, Nirvana. Anton has been involved with the band ever since we moved down to London three years ago. He supports Barnsley football club and is another lovely man. The photo shoot is for a Halloween special and will feature in the 'NEW LOOK' Melody Maker. Smaller and better quality. I still think that MM should be a bi-weekly.
So after this we all pile into cars again and make the short trip down to Camden Lock to Dingwalls. This is where we are playing tonight. It's all in aid of the Q awards. They asked us and a band called 'Shack' to play acoustic sets. After soundcheck we do loads of interviews. QUESTION: How does it feel to have been nominated for three Q awards? ANSWER: Eh?
It's kinda a wierd thing. It's all fun. I don't read Q. I don't read. It's good though that the readers have not just got our record but gone that step further and picked up a phone or wrote in to vote it their favourite. We go out and do the Melody Maker interview at a nearby restaurant at 6pm and return at 8.15 just in time for the end of 'Shacks' set.
The place is packed. The volume of people talking is embarrassing. You wouldn't know there was a band on. Wankers. When we go on I tell them all to shut the fuck up. Some of them do but most of them are so deaf to anything other than their own voice that they are beyond salvation. Fuck them. Pardon the French but Fuck them.
We play well. The people down the front get down and then we're off. More interviews and then I've had enough. Bed is calling. I walk home stopping in Kentish Town to call Nora and then go up to Johnny's to say hi.
Johnny is the back line tech for the band. We have been friends since '89 when we discovered we both dug R.E.M a great deal. I recorded my first ever song on a reel to reel in Johnny's bedroom and performed on stage for the first time with him on electric guitar and me singing at the school talent show singing a song about the headmaster, Mr Mullen. 'The Mr Mullen Blues'. We should have won. We was robbed, I tell ya, robbed.
We watch the Clive Anderson show. LL Cool J is charming and a 92 year old John Mills is cool. Then we watch 'The History of Hip Hop' on Channel 4. Hip Hop is amazing. After this I jump in another car home, to my own bed. We play in Leicester tomorrow.
