Thoroughly knackered we all get on the bus at 11am and depart for the 45 minute journey that will take us to the first day of V99 in Chelmsford.

We are due on stage at 6.30pm. On the way out of London a quiet voice says something about the bus heading in the wrong direction. 5 hours later we arrive in Chelmsford in tatters. The driver had got it in his head that we were playing at Reading and so drove in the opposite direction. Lovely.

The gig was one of the best this year. Not as good as 'T'. We were herded towards the VIP area and for the first time I noticed people looking at us. Checking us out. Following us. Hmmmm.

We spoke to MTV's Zane, a lovely man whose 'Brand New' show is cool. Then 'The Big Breakfast' did an interview. Between these interviews the people who'd been gathering pounced and we signed and signed and did all these photographs.

The volume of people was frightening. Security escorted us out of the VIP area and to Danny from Radio 1 who asked us about how everything was going. "Everything is cool".

Later, on the way to see the Superfurries (who were great) we spotted James Brown, Ian Brown?s dad, with 'THE JUDGE'.

The Judge was carrying a briefcase which we joked could have been full of money. Thing is, the briefcase was full of money. Loads of cash.

James is quite small. He looks like a beany doll. A beany doll in a black suit with black leather gloves, clutching a red silk handkerchief, which was used to dry a continually wet upper lip. That was the Godfather of Soul. That was the first day of V99.

We left really late, Dougie shaggin in the back of the bus with Andy and James Brown. Spunk Flying, blood squirting.

"Come in ma boots white boy" ...
"with relish Mr Brrown...Mmmmmm!"

(From 'The Hidden Meaning' Travis fanzine)

Another week and another festival was upon us! More Travis history was made too (they certainly enjoy doing these things in style!), and the very day we watched them pull one of the biggest crowds of the day at the Chelmsford V99 site, The Man Who took up the top spot in the British album charts! Fran took the golden opportunity to announce this little piece of information during a break mid-set. The noise from the crowd was unbelievable, it was as though we were united as one big happy Travis family. Everyone was genuinely ecstatic and the lads looked like they were over the moon!

V99 was another milestone for us, having stood through the two bands who'd performed on the second stage before Travis, we watched them come and go, leaving little impression on anyone. Suddenly though, the crowd had quadrupled in size. Everyone was hungry to grab a piece of the Travis experience. A few days later, while watching footage of the event on BBC2 we were surprised to see ourselves in the crowd shots, captured going mental to 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?' Haha! Classic!!!
