About a week before the show, my friend and I found out that Travis were doing an in-store acoustic performance and signing at Let It Be Records, but I was afraid I was going to miss it because I had to work that morning for a bit. At around 1:30 or so that day, my friend Adam and I took off for Let It Be Records. We got there and his friend had saved us a spot...RIGHT in front of where they set the "stage" up! I was literally about six feet away from Fran and Dougie. What a fantastic set! They played five songs, I think. "Driftwood," "Writing To Reach You," "As You Are," "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" and "Blue Flashing Light." There was a wee boy there with his dad and Fran made a point to "edit" out the curse words in "Blue Flashing Light." I thought that was very sweet of him. It was raining off and on all day so Fran found that amusing. Then all four of the guys sat at this table to sign stuff. Neil wasn't there, however, because his wife just had Lola. So there was his replacement, Bo Walsh, and he was really nice. A few days before the appearance I had drawn cartoons of the guys in the band to give to them at the signing. I brought them with me. Anyway, when it came to my turn to get something signed I handed them the envelope and said "First off, this is for you" and Fran said "Thank you!" and opened up the envelope and looked through the drawings and said "Oh wow!!! These are great! They're almost Japanese! Fantastic!" and Dougie was leaning over and he was grinning and he seemed very pleased. Fran held up the one of himself and said "Hey, this could almost be you!" [we've both got the short spiky hair thing going, except mine's a bit longer] and then I said "That's it, I'm the mysterious fifth member of Travis that nobody knows about!" Then they all signed the cover of my Select magazine with them on the cover. They were SUPER nice, probably some of the nicest human beings I've ever met. Fran talked to my friend for quite a bit, and if it weren't for all the people in the line, the two of them probably would have yapped for some time.
It was great seeing them in such an intimate setting -- especially at one of my favourite record shops.
