Sorry, if I offended you, the pagan tradition of elfs and the shortest day of the year go hand in hand with the Christian message here (as the Catholic priests saw it fit to feed to the natives), even the name of the festival is pre-christian, Joulu.
Perhaps this is better suited picture, I love that church in the center of Helsinki.

That's Saint Lucia, and girls/young women wearing candle crowns are seen especially on her day, December 13th.
