Juli, there are so many album covers that use art though! I like that the eye and lips are the work of an artist from the 1970s and not just some random thing.

Oh, I know. But I prefer original artworks, so I'm slightly frustrated nonetheless. I love Roald Dahl though, so that makes me feel a little better :oP

:) Yeah...he's awesome! I didn't realize how many of the classic children's stories he actually wrote.

Speaking about "stolen" artworks, what about this latest Coldplay album? That's so obviously not their own artwork, but they still seem to get away with it.

I don't think they are getting away with it. Paintings/artwork whether famous or not are licensed out all of the time. It happens with book covers, ads, cds, etc...all kinds of visual media. Artists license out their artwork as a way to keep making money off an image. The artists still hold the copyright...they just "rent out" if you will...their art. Sometimes when designing a project...licensing an image is the way to go, because it evokes the feeling that you want to get across to your audience. As a graphic designer, I have licensed artwork/photos to use on projects. As an illustrator, I have also licensed out my own artwork. So when you see a famous painting used on something...in most cases it has been licensed for use.

The cover of ‘Switch Bitch’ was designed by David Pelham, and published 1981. David Pelham left Penguin in 1980 so was it a set of three that he later added to, or... ? I need to find a 1979 edition."

Thank you, Mr Detective No.1!! These designs are really cool! I couldn't find some more birdsall design, so if you have some more... let us see!

And here is the "little story how Mrs Detective No.2" *gg* found the Song to Self single:
- clicked on amazon to have a look if I can hear some song samples of OTJS (no).
-saw two different releases, first: UK import, relase date 29.9., second: with release date 26.9. and the label: "Vertigo Be (Universal)".
-thought "Häääh?" and googled for this label and found the last.fm site where there was also the Song To Self single.

Voilà. Just a little curious. And... if I get that right, OTJS is relased in "the rest of the world", as Fran said over there in the other thread, 3 days earlier...???
I almost don't dare asking...

Good question! If there's a boardie out there who just bought this...reveal yourself! :) That'd be a pretty cool thing to own. Now I want to read these books.

I like this cover so much more now that there is this whole story behind it.

I bet if you post those on a designer site like fecal face or gigposters , those would be lifted so quick it'd make your head snap . just the way it goes. Ever notice in a museum there's often the listing for a painting , school of or after . That means someone borrowed or copied the image .

its a short story

plot: Two bomber pilots are having a drink in a bar and discussing the War. One of them has been in it since the beginning and he has become obsessed with the arbitrariness of the fate he has been dealing out. "I keep thinking during a raid, when we are running over the target, just as we are going to release our bombs, I keep thinking to myself, shall I just jink a little; shall I swearve a fraction to one side, then my bombs will fall on someone else." They agree that everybody jinks at one time or another. Then they discuss a fellow pilot, Stinker, who went crazy after he was forced to leave his dog behind after a mission. Stinker walked around for the rest of the war talking to his invisible pet. Then the discuss "car-waiting", which means waiting for twenty seconds before you leave an intersection. Then you avoid hitting the car or person you might have twenty seconds earlier. They admire a beautiful woman in the bar with a "marvellous bosom." "I bet I've killed lots of women more beautiful than that one", says the fatalistic one. He wonders what would happen if all the people in the bar fell down dead. They finish their drinks and head out onto the street. They decide to take a taxi somewhere else and drink more whisky. "Somewhere where there are no other people but just us and the man with egg on his beard."
