Hello! A friend of mine is leaving for Europe in a few days and I was wondering if you have some recommendations of places to visit, museums, restaurants, pubs, where to shop, etc. She'll be visiting many cities: London, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Viena, Prague, Venice, Florence, Rome, Barcelona, Madrid... I'm sure I'm forgetting at least one... Anyway, your help is very much appreciated! =o)
ciao Alessandra! come va? tutto bene?
well I saw that there are 3 italian towns
let's start from Venice: well what to say, venice is a museum in the open air, it's very particular because it's a town built on the water and just for this it deserves a visit. there she can visit S. Marco cathedral and its square full of pigeons, the Doge palace (the ancient city hall of venice), rialto bridge a monumental bridge above the canal grande. about museums i don't know, there is palazzo Grassi where sometimes they do some nice art expos but well Venice itself is a museum! and then a tour of the islands near venice in particular Murano where they make very beautiful glass sculptures!
Florence: i dunno much of it because i just been there for one day, but here you can see the cathedral and baptistery, il ponte vecchio, piazza della signoria, santa maria novella (a church next to the train station i think), palazzo pitti, san miniato al monte (an other church), and uffizzi museum. if your friend has the time in her staying in florence i think she could catch the train and visiting the town of Siena, not far from florence, this town deserves really a visit i think it's like a jewell! remember:trains in italy are always late!
Rome: well so mani things the colosseum, the imperial Forum, San pietro (vatican), Caracalla thermae, San giovanni in laterano, Villa adriana (but it's quite out of the town), vatcan museums, cappella sisitina (still in vatican), piazza venezia and the monument to the unknown soldier, catacombs (they're out of town but they are easily reachable by bus, they deserve a visit), castel sant'angelo, and going to one of 7 hills of rome, like the Gianicolo where you can see the downtown from overlooking. attention: whene visiting San pietro she should wear long trousers and she should cover her shoulders because they cuoldn't let her come in...
so that's all. one thing about italy: every region and town have its particular kind of food, so i suggest your friend not always to eat pizza but to try the local food if it's not expensive of course... like in venice for example, while in the Trastevere, a quarter of rome, she could find some cheap trattoria
Erm, then I'm afraid she won't know much about "Europe" when she goes back...
She HAS to (and I mean, HAS to) see Berlin, at least. And I'm not even from Berlin, just convinced that it's one of the world's most interesting cities... nothing to do with Sauerkraut and Oktoberfest though ;D (that'd be my city, Munich. It's beautiful, but I guess Berlin is better for a short trip than Bavaria - cause once you see Munich you want to staaay forever ;D)
Wow!!! Thank you so much everyone! I don't think she's going to Copenhagen or Scotland, but thank you for the tips! I'll tell her anyway, in case she decides to change her plans =o). About Germany, I asked her today (before posting here) why isn't she going, and she told me that it's something she'd like to do on another trip, when she can dedicate more time to explore the country. "Germany and Greece deserve another trip", those were her words =oP .
Thanks again everyone!!! Do you know any particular places to eat that aren't too expensive? And shops?
Please keep your recommendations coming! =o) It's really nice to know a bit more about all these places in Europe that I'd like to visit one day myself (which are more than those my friend is visiting this time, but it doesn't matter =oP).
I'm not European, but when I went to Vienna my favorite thing was the Schonbrunn Palace (Schloss Schonbrunn). The palace and the gardens are very beautiful.
