Acoustic is tougher on the fingers for starting out but where most folks begin, try a electro acoustic with slightly thiner gauge of strings.

If you are just starting out, go for acoustic. You can play it anywhere, anytime without having to plug in.

P.S. Yes, you'll get blisters, but callouses are a guitar player's rite of passage.

I've been told electric by some, acoustic by some and some have said either it doesn't make a difference.

Mmm, not very helpful is it.

Start on an acoustic, it'll drive you in the right direction for learning - learn the chord shapes first and the rest will follow.

Buy a beginners guitar with Nylon strings, and work your way up from there. When you're sure you're going to stick with it, and feel confident, but a steel string acoustic guitar. That way you'll be ready spend a bit more money and get the guitar you really want, once you've passed through that beginner stage. And won't be so tough on the fingers.

Electric guitar will come in time, learn the basics first!

Nylon strings?! NOoooooo! Go for broke and toughen up those fingers. It's a Red Badge of Courage.

By red you mean the colors of your fingertips, right? Man, I was so happy to get through that phase.

I'd say try a few out and see what feels right.

I got my guitar last christmas, an electric with steel strings, and have found it really easy to learn. I play on my friend's acoustic guitar, but I can't stand nylon strings!

So like I say, try some out if you can and see what you like!

I've played guitar for three years, and trust me- buy an acoustic! Like Turtleneck said, you can take it anywhere (which is always nice), but beyond that- it is harder on your fingers to press down on the strings of an acoustic, and once you've mastered that it's fairly easy to transition into the electric- I really think it's just good to have that experience behind you. You can really play any style of music on an acoustic. I own both an acoustic and electric, and honestly- I just love playing the acoustic. I love the sound of it, and I think whatever you learned on will always be where you're most comfortable- so perhaps my opinion is a bit biased! : P

Also, as long as your budget allows it, I would invest in a fairly nice guitar. Purchasing some rinky-dink, low quality instrument is just not worth it!

But congratulations on taking the big leap, playing the guitar is such a wonderful, fun hobby (as well as a creative outlet for the musically inclined)! ; )

LOL- and I totally agree there, forget the nylon strings!

Also, I think it's very important for a beginner to invest in a good tuner. Purchase one that has a needle gauge (as appose to one that only lights up) so you can easily see how to get it in tune.
