Aaaah, when I started reading I thought - wait a second, I should just pretend not to understand a word and MAKE you write in German ;) But TEN years ago, wow, in that case it's great you can still understand some German!
You could have tried to answer in German, though ;)

Yes, yes I know! I blame my undisciplined class, we responded in English all the time, and our instructor would bark "Auf Deutsch!" at us. We really bad students now that I think about it. Ich weiss nicht. became a very] handy phrase. Haha!

Yeah I came here with my parents when I was ten, so I did go to school in Iran for a bit to be able to read and write in Farsi, but nowadays I speak it with a funny accent! And if I come across something written in Farsi, like a website I immediately change it because I don't have that sense of familiarity with Farsi anymore. When I listen to a Persian news program, I don't really understand much because they use all these bigs words that are usually Arabic=/

Sth about Florida? Maybe "The Board" has developed a brain and started to read between our lines, read our secret thoughts - do you maybe want to move to Florida? ;)

I know the problem from some of my cousins. They moved to Germany when they were 10 and 6, and even though they went to a Persian school here, they can't understand everything like a "real" native speaker.

I'm half Iranian, my Dad was from a village next to Tabriz -I have loads of relatives in Iran, but I know only a few of them in person and I am not even allowed to enter Iranian ground. It's all very confusing.
I only started studying Farsi last year, stupid me, after my dad had died. He didn't like speaking Farsi with his brothers and sisters when I was small, and he never really wanted me to learn the language until I was 16 or 17, and then I was always "too busy"...

Hah, I know some Persian songs from my childhood, but the lyrics are a little blurred in my memory ("Dokhtare Sahra"? Does this song actually exist?) My dad liked Nasrin, but I'm not so sure about her music ;D

So, which songs would you recommend? ;)

:D Was your instructor German? The "Ich weiß nicht" thing is really popular, yes... I know it well from my Spanish lessons, "No lo sé" is the most frequently used sentence in our classes ;) - as was "I'm sorry, I don't know/I can't remember" in my English classes at school ;)

Oh you're half! That's so cool! So your dad is an Iranian Turk? My dad's family is from that area too I think, but my dad totally rejects his Turkish roots and obviously I don't know a word in Turkish.

Dokhtareh Sahrah sounds familiar, but I don't know I'm not good with Persian songs! As for songs you should listen to, hmmm listen to Googoosh! She's the most popular artist. I don't really listen to Persian music so I'm not sure what to recommend, but my mom likes Googoosh and so does every other Iranian person lol.

Do you know how to write in Farsi?

She was either German, or First Generation...I think, I don't remember. My hometown, Cincinnati, had a lot of Germans settle there back in the day. We were also fond of, Ich kann nicht verstehe,...and for some reason two guys in my class learned the word ausgeseichnet and that was their answer to everything.

Yepp, I'm half (sounds strange). My dad always insisted on his roots, he was so angry with his half sister (the one who emigrated to Germany, too) for rejecting her roots (she claimed to have forgotten everything about Azeri/Turkish, and he refused to talk in Farsi to her, so their conversations were quite funny to listen to, even if I didn't understand a word)

Aaah, that Dokhtare Sahra song is driving me mad, my Farsi instructor said she knew the melody but she couldn't quite place it... Googoosh? Okay, I'll give it a try then, thanks!

I learned writing in Farsi some years ago, before I started actually studying the language, but I think if I had to write something right now I could only write my name - I have to practice more...

Do you visit your relatives in Iran often? Or did your parents really draw the line when they left the country?

Ausgezeichnet? That's a perfect answer to everything if you don't want to talk to people (they'll think you're totally nuts) ;D

Wow so you have lots of family in Germany or more in Iran?
I haven't been to Iran for almost 11 years, not cuz I can't, but it's always bad timing and my parents are always busy. And to be honest I prefer to see the other parts of the world first before I see Iran because I've already seen what's it's like in Iran, although I haven't seen any holy or historical sites, which is sad. Two of my aunts also live in Canada so we are not alone here. My dad's side of the family is in Sweden tho, and I've been there.

Have you been to Iran? It just seems like it's such a different place there..I'm so used to the way of life here and I feel like if I go there I'll have nothing in common with people my age:S

The reason I said to listen to Googoosh is mostly for the lyrics. Her old songs (70s) have good lyrics. Also, because she's part of the Iranian culture. They call her the 'queen of pop' in Iran lol. Have you tried Iranian food? Ok I'll stop bugging you now!lol

11 years? Wow, that's really a long time. So you're not missing a thing?

The half sister of my dad emigrated to Germany with her husband and daughters, as did one of my Iranian cousins. I know them, and I love my aunt's cooking, she's like the best cook ever, and she specialised in Persian food ;) Unfortunately she doesn't want to write a cookbook for me, she says it's all "intuitive" (but she's just too lazy to write in German, really...)

All my other relatives (on my father's side) are still in Iran. My mother is German and she only has one brother, and they're not really close.
I have never been to Iran, my dad didn't visit the country for years, and then he was always too afraid to take me there. Now I'm trying to get a visa, but I think someone put a "NO" in a database for visas or sth, because they always come up with strange explanations why I can't get one, and why I also can't get an Iranian passport (all in all, I seem to be "stateless" for the Iranian government).
But I have to go to my dad's village one day, because he wanted to be buried there, traditionally and everything. I couldn't even attend the funeral...
So, one day.

The queen of pop, oh dear, should I be alarmed when Iranians call someone the queen of popmusic? ;D

Hahaha she's very mainstream, but she has the it factor something that makes her stand out. Her voice is not bad, she was really popular in the 70s, then had to stop singing after the revolution and for many years she lived in Iran and couldn't sing=/ Few years ago she moved to Canada and put a big concert and everyone saw her..even Farah, Shah's wife came.

I can't believe it's that hard to get a visa=/ One thing tho, once you go there, you'll have guys lining up to marry you;) They love foreigners lol..it's hilarious. And yes, I love Persian food. Oh Gosh, where do I start?! My mom is an awesome cook, but maybe I'm just biased. I love kabob (chicken kabob and barg) but my fave is Ghormeh Sabzi! Have you tried it? So good!

Of course I miss some things about Iran. Things that you'll find here, but they're just not as great. Like their bread (lavash, barbari) it's SO different there and way better. Or have you tried lavashak? If you haven't, you should lol it's one of the tastiest Iranian snacks (if you can call it that) it's made from fruits and it's really sour. And Spring! Spring in Iran is soo different and so much more fun, esp if you're a kid, you end up getting so much money. The great thing about Spring is the New Year and how it brings all Iranians (regardless of religion) together.

You should go to Kish..it's nice there!

Honestly, I hope you get a chance to go and visit.

If you really want the recipes I can get them for you! What would you like? Just Kabob?
