Pffft! They sold bazillions of copies of TMW, I'm sure they're fine :P

True, but they're not in it for nothing. It just seems wrong to profess to love Travis so much, then just help yourself (not you personally, but meaning the board in general) to a huge chunk of back catalogue for zip.

I just can't get my brain around this "open season" approach. Sorry. Call it a character flaw, but I still think the band deserves to be paid. The odd track here or there is one thing, but this mass giveaway has done my head in!

All take and no give yadda yadda.....

The reason why they would be in it for no money would be because they love making music and especially playing it to people and they can't do that with no fans. Not having much money in return means that more people know about you, and it's way more fun because they're playing to new fans.

Btw, that's entirely speculation, so I have n idea what Fran thinks.

Ha ha- made me laugh! Utopian bollocks!!!

Nothing personal, just don't agree with that at all.

I'm not in Fran's head either, to be fair. But it's all a bit touchy feely to me. It's a job. They might love it, but I suspect that'd soon stop if they only ever made music, or performed, for free, in the name of making new fans or treating those who can't afford to buy tickets or cd's.

Yeah, like you say, there's give and there's take. But Fran certainly wouldn't come on here and connect with the fans if it was just a job. They love performing and doing that, but like everyone they balance it against other things, like money. It's very possible that in a few years time they'll decide that their kids should come first. Or maybe they'll charge £20 for the next album and prove me wrong ;)

I've heard Fran say several times that he thinks it's OK to share at least B-sides for free. He actually recommended some radio guy to download "20" via Limewire in an interview last year, realizing a little too late that the company might not be too happy with that. Here is an older article in which he also seems to support file sharing.

Now now...From sublime to ridiculous!!! :)

I think you're right that it's a compromise between pleasing the fans, while earning a living. But while it's one thing to advocate the odd free b-side, surely it's another to do what the original poster has done here, and offload big time!

It's always a pleasure to see Fran's posts on the forum, and I'm aware that he has plenty to say other than just keeping up his own profile. So that is appreciated. But that's not quite the same as saying "here, have all my music for nothing", is it?

I'll go now & have a look at the link in the next post, and will no doubt find I'm completely off base. Am preparing to blush.

Replying to your first post I think you raised a very good question here, Tonie. However, i believe that unless we get a definite answer from Fran, Andy, Neil and Dougie we will be arguing about this issue till the cows come home and never reach an agreement.

I've used the b-sides project for downloading stuff that's on there, i've promoted it and even contributed to it. Every now and then i've felt a twinge of guilt doing so - well, it *is* stealing from the band in a way. But what are fans to do if they haven't been there from the very beginning but would like to know all the music that's there (with all the hidden gems that come as b-sides)?

Well, there's always the possibility of just listening to them on the travis.ography site; CDs can be bought on Ebay, and there are also digital tracks. But you can't take travis.ography with you everywhere you go. Many don't feel comfortable bidding on Ebay and doing business with perfect strangers. And the trouble with digital tracks is that they simply aren't available in every country. There have been plenty of occasions when i've found some online store selling digital tracks, i've been happy as hell for finding exactly the stuff i've been looking for only to bump into the small print saying grrr, if you are from outside the UK and try to buy music from here we'll come and get you!

As a possible solution and a compromise i propose that older b-sides remain available as they are now, but newer stuff (including the TBWNN singles) would not be added there until they are no longer available for buying from Wee Store. Would that be okay?

Oh boy, i think that was my longest rant on this board... Sorry 'bout that! :S

Evelyn, thanks for your project. Not everybody have means to play vinyls, or are able to find old b-sides etc. At least you're not giving the actual albums out for free. I've tried to purchase the missing songs from iTunes, but not everything is there. I suppose I've paid back in some way by buying 12 memory both from iTunes and as a cd…
Also, your project includes some live stuff not available elsewhere.

Really interesting comments above. Nothing to apologise for when you rant - it's good for you! One thing I totally agree with, is that we don't fully know what Travis think of this freeloading excercise. I've put 2 + 2 and drawn a conclusion from my own stance. But I make no apology for it!

At the same time, I've shot myself in the foot, cos I've heard literally nothing from the next album, and from lurking I see that files are flying around all over the place. But, out of interest, did Travis leak those, or someone else?

I'm one of those who has been there from the begining, but I'm not a collector, so only have a few b-sides from the odd single that I've picked up. I'm not obsessive, but always welcome hearing the old stuff. It's also an expensive hobby!

Doesn't make me less of a fan just cos I focus on albums and gigs!!!! And I really don't feel that I've missed out by not hearing every note they've ever played. But that's just me. And I'm sure I'd love the luxury of knowing all the old stuff.

I'm in the UK, and can't possibly comment on the availability of stuff overseas. If you say you can't get it, I believe you. I don't know where you're from, but if it's restricted availability, that sucks. I've never tried to get hold of music that's not widely available in the UK, so it's a tough one to judge.

I don't have a problem with ebay, and if finances allowed, I'd bid for all the Travis rarities on offer there. There's so much protection for both buyer and seller that not being comfortable with ebay is a bit of a poor excuse, in my experience.

IMHO, if you can get it online or in the shops, then you should pay for it. No brainer. But if out of print, it's different, and I'd love to know how to get around that.

Does it take us back to Michael Coates' or other charitable causes as a vehicle for paying for rarer material? How do the band members feel about that?

I just started this debate cos it seemed that the freeloading was spiralling out of control in this thread, and I haven't changed my mind. Perhaps Fran can clear this up, please???? :)

Files, as in plural? Hmm, i only know of J.Smith being shared here. And that was played on the radio (sort of by accident, as i understand) from where it made its way here.
And i don't think you're in any disadvantage for not having heard it - i bet it will be a nice experience to listen to the new album without having heard it's tracks (in not-so-good quality) beforehand.

Tonie wrote:

Of course not! There's just different kind of people out there - some need to have the whole back catalogue with albums, singles, promos and the lot. And some don't. And some are somewhere in the middle. And all are 'true fans' (i hate this expression though) :)

And yep, when there's a will there's also a way of getting it. Legally, i mean :) I was just pointing out what are or could be the problems with stores and auctions etc.

Tonie wrote:

While the idea of getting the unofficially shared b-sides for giving money to charity (i.e. besides Michael Coates's cause) is really applaudable, how should or would or could it be run? And which charity to choose? Do Travis have one that's closest to their heart? so many questions!

I think i can hear the cows coming home now :) While not 100% disagreeing with you, i find it hard letting go and not protecting this way of ours of sharing Travis's music. We do need the opinion of the band. Badly. :)

Getting a bit serious in here. I have downloaded a few because I knew no way of getting them elsewhere. I've also got some from iTunes (which didn't have any at the time these were uploaded which was ages ago) I don't think the band mind. They've said that before I'm sure.
