Hi Guys,

I was bored today, And thought i'd test out some of my older gear and see if it's still good or not before selling. using my old audio interface and some old Mic's.

It's not bad for pretty much multi-tracked live takes. Bar Drums and Strings.

Have a listen sure:

Great stuff! It has a certain crispness that I can never capture on my recordings. It's probs the fact you use tape that makes the difference. What equipment in particular do you use? :)

Its a really poor recording to be honest.

The tape is a rowland 8 track.

to capture the telecaster electric and the voice.
The voice was recorded with an AKG D5 vocal mix.
I usually use a neumann u87 and will use that again to re-record it.

i converted the Analogue signal to digital via an Alesis IO:26 in to a mac.
I also use an focusrite ISA producer pack for bass and vocals mostly for it's pre-amp and compression.

Strings are LASS synth in box as well as the drums which are Stephen Slate Drums.

I'll redo the whole thing digital and using better mics etc...
Should sound much better it was a really really rushed job!

Pete

That's interesting, thanks! I hardly have what you could call any real kind of recording setup - I own an iMac with Logic Express, an SM58 (I'd really like to bag a nice condenser mic for vocals some day!), a very simple mixing desk that I basically just use to get signal in rather than do any real mixing on, and an old m-box. Stuff I record tends to sound 'flat', I can't fully describe it.

Tape comes with its own problems for sure, but I do find that it helps the recording sound more lively and dynamic somehow, unless at least you have the right and good quality equipment. Used to think that recording straight to digital could bypass the need for lots of equipment and still give you a great sound... but now I've a tendency to thinking that it's a quick way to an 'average' sound. :P

If you're interested in getting some live drums on the song if you decide to re-record it, have a look round my site at http://www.drumtracksdirect.co.uk and see what you think. I could probably incorporate the original loop into the track as well. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.
