When are you moving to London? I know someone who's moving there in March. Kinda wish he was gone now to be honest, haha. I'm quite jealous of you, I'd love to get away from Cork for a bit.

Tesco are doing some decent phone contracts

Free BlackBerry Curve (on o2)
500Mb internet browsing
500 talk minutes
unlimited texts
24month contract at £25.54 a month
(and you get a free £50 tesco gift card)

Nice One Monkey,

I've heard Tesco are pretty good, there are also no coverage problems as you are on the O2 network.

Mind you should maybe have a look at "International Call" add-ons for calling home, mind you the other option is you can buy "Phone Cards" that are pre paid then you only pay normal network charges.

what does 500mb date work out to? Is that a reasonable amount? Ive always had unlimited internet and data (although I dont have a smartphone so it isnt that much use) so I dont really know if that is reasonable. I do however like food, so tesco giftcard is good!
Im not so concerned with international minutes. A cheap international texting option would be nice though. But with the world of Skype, etc, I dont really need to be calling people at home.

Im hoping someone lets me sign up for a phone with an international credit card, which means I will have a bill proving where I live, which means a bank will let me open an account!

thanks boys

Completely forgt aboot Skype !!

On the allocation side of things I used to have 250mb on my phone and used it to check e-mail /travis board/ Football Scores/ Saint Mirren Forum / Wiki etc. I would get quite close to using my allocation over a month, I don't know about the UK but here you can check your usage online so it's easy to keep an eye on it.

Do Not over-use. You will get hammered for it, I managed to run up 2 bills of around €80 on a broadband dongle (5gb usage for €10[?] a month), My arsehole aquaintance run up a bill of €270 on the same dongle even after the bill plan had been changed (€20 a month for 15gb), an allocation I have not managed to get anywhere near breaking, mind you I wasn't streaming loads of fucking porn on a dongle that was leant to me by a mate, even after he had warned it was in his ex's name and it was she who actually paid the bill on it. FUCKING PRICK !!!!

ya, it would be more for checking in with the world, than anything. Although Im sure if I had access to fancy internet things I would use them a bit more. It would just be useful when travelling if I dont want to lug my laptop around but be able to check in with the world.
Oh well, cant do much till i get there, and a few sites won't even let me look at their shops and promotions because Im not in the UK. But I will keep an eye out.
Merci. (I should stop using random french, oui?)

I just made a delicious curry. Im preparing myself for the UK :)

You should get yourself a cheap shit pay as you go phone from ebay. It would mean you would have a phone you can use as soon as you get into the country. Best of all you can just dump it once you have had the chance to shop around for one on contract.

Can you get a free sim (pay as you go) in the UK from O2 or whoever, because in which case all you need to do is get your current phone unlocked (sim free)

Not a phone I know, but Santa brought me an Ipad for Xmas and I'm slowing realising I'm becoming addicted to the damn thing. It follows me around the house apart from the loo - things haven't got that bad........yet!

As regards a bank account it used to be pretty easy all you did was walk into a bank and deposit money and they gave you an account but if it's the same as it is in Ireland (probably will be it's probably some EU regulation) it can be a bit more difficult. A passport and proof of address is needed, also if you are trying to deposit a lot of money, I think it's over €3,000 in Ireland you have to prove where it came from so have a receipt from your Canadian account.

When I used to do the banking for the Law School a few years back there was always people trying to put a year's rent into an account, usually Asians/Far Easterns and they couldn't understand why the bank wouldn't accept it without proof of where it came from.

Yes, post code is one of the most important things in UK. If you go to the bank to do something slightly more complicating, it's always "What's your post code?".

We have an off-shore account, and wanted to see if we could deposit cash into it while in UK. Unfortunately we didn't have the account number with us, so we went to the local branch of the bank to see if they could help. Didn't get very far, as everything depended on that bloody post code. As ours is a Finnish one, the system didn't understand it, and the blockhead behind the counter kept asking for the post code in his thickest West Yorkshire accent "pooost coode?"

Mind you, opening a bank account in Germany 15 years ago was very difficult, too, and all sorts of papers were needed.

Yeah, the brits run their whole system on postcodes, it's quite amusing trying to explain the Irish system to them, If you live outside Dublin you have no postcode or it's basically the County you live in. Within Dublin there are about 20 post codes, 10 North of the Liffey (odd numbers) and 10 South of the Liffey (even numbers). Dublin 1 & 2 are the city centre and the numbers get higher the further out you go so Blanchardstown is Dublin 15 or Tallagh is Dublin 24 for example.

As an aside Tallagh and Blanch can be it bit rough and can be known also as "Knackeragura", "Pram Springs" or "Tallaghfornia"

I'm in The Boar's Head on Capel Street, been here since 8:00, it opens at 7:00 because of the fruit market in Smithfield the guys there start in the very early hours of the morning so there is a concentration of pubs in the area with early licenses, the other place this happens in Dublin is down by the quays/docks.

I was planning on staying in the library in college and studying all day and my MP3 just ran out of battery. Argh! So annoyed right now. Also, it is super cold today, I'm not liking it.
