Hi all,

I am looking for some help, I need to get some Anti-virus software for a laptop and I don't know which is better.

Norton(Symantec) or McAfee

I asked a couple of folk and they have said neither, there are plenty of free programs on the interweb, AVG and Avast were two mentioned has anyone tried any of these I don't know if I can trust "freeware".

Any help, please??

tried norton which is quite good but expensive! And you gotta rebuy it every year -pretty shite!
Had then Anti-Vir - but replaced it with AVG which is probably the best free software you can get. Works just fine with me, and it's easy to handle.

A friend of mine which is a computer scientist is pretty fond of it.

Works fine with xp and vista..

you can define when and how it should scan and when to check for updates - also do it manuel.

Plus: you have an anti-spyware, and link-scanner

Noooo noooo nooo....
hate them! Been working with macs for years! Lots of programs won't work on a Mac and you can't change any settings in the BIOS (ok - not the BIOS - but whatever it's called there..)
Windows is much more fun when you want to tinker a bit ;)

You just have to know what and how to do - and no danger exists anymore :)

You can have windows on a mac, like i do with a program called bootcamp...
So, its still a good choice....

I thought that if you have Windows installed to a partition of your intel Mac you'll need some virus protection. But that's not quite the same as Bootcamp, or is it? I'm still using PowerPC G5 (Freehand reasons), so I haven't even had a change to look into it.

Just checked, some boffins in another site recommend these for all sorts of Microsoft trouble, the first one being anti virus device.

www.avast.com
www.spybot.com
www.lavasoft.com/software/adaware/
www.ccleaner.com

Sygate is good for firewall purposes, apparently.

I.T guy at uni stuck on McAfee for me, he says Norton slows your computer down or something... and he also put on PC Spyware Doctor and Ad Aware... I'm a complete technophobe, but those two are free online, free ones are just as good and don't cost an arm and a leg (or so I'm told).

Thanks for all your help (and understanding).

I installed AVG yesterday and it found 2 trojans and 123 tracking cookies, I also run spybot and avast and it hadn't found these. So I would highly recommend it.

Yes, i still have AVG installed on the Windows part of the disc (which is 32GB), but i only have windows for running some programs and rarely gaming....
I am using mac for the medias mostly, so i really dont need windows, just in case of...... anything.....
