I agree with that.

I agree Chinese Blues has a slight Be Here Now-era Oasis sound, but that's no criticism at all - Stand By Me is one of my fave songs of all time and it's a top album. It's the really pronounced, almost brash guitars/piano/strings etc building up into a kind of 'wall of sound', that sorta thing. Couldn't liken the song itself, it's just the sound of it.

Aside from that point, comparisons are lazy journalism, no more.

i am quite shocked at the Guardian..normally it is a really reliable newspaper..hmm...well..Long Way Down is my fave song on the album...AND i love Importance of being idle by Oasis (my favourite song by them) so maybe i'm just weird :S

I'm not sure anyone should ever compare Travis to Oasis, I'm a fan of both, but they do have a different sound. Unlike Oasis, Travis have kept on progressing their music throughout their time, whereas Oasis can't help but go back to the same old thing. I like Oasis because of the nostalgic value, but I love Travis because they never fail to suprise me with each album. Travis, you're bigger and better all in your own way. If I went off reviews and charts I wouldn't have my individual taste in music.. and to be honest I'd probably never end up listening to decent music!

I agree with you 100 percent!

I understand that it's hard to describe sound. So instead, people end up using comparisons to other music to get their point across. But Travis are very different than these bands they are being compared to, and, like you said, constantly changing their sound. They're always surprising me too with fresh, exciting music.

Yeah Chinese Blues sounds very Oasis-y to me, 'specially at the start.

I don't really see any Oasis in Long Way Down. There's an 'ooh' near the end that I think sounds quite Beatles/McCartney-ish though.

Seems more people think the same. No particular song, it just sounds like something Oasis might do.

'importance of being idol' is the only oasis song i ever liked. I just can't get into oasis, they just get annoying after about 4 songs.

I think you can compare Oasis and Travis, but if you do, you cannot overlook the differences. Both bands are about making music for the fun of it, that's a key thing, and dare I say it, I think Travis would've learnt a lot from Noel Gallgher when they toured together back in the mid-90's.

Chinese Blues has an Oasis vibe, and that's not a bad thing at all....

uh oh spaghetti o's

Ah its not really a big deal.
Critics give their own opinion, not everyone will agree. And if someone wants the album they will buy it. And hey.. a bit of controversy never hurt. People will want to hear the song if they hear its supposedly copying oasis... hence more sales and potential fans if they like it!
