About 23 years ago, I heard Travis for the very first time.

I live in Taiwan, an island surrounded by the sea in Asia. Back then, my knowledge of British rock music was quite limited. The only bands I really knew were The Beatles and Oasis.

One day after school, I came home and noticed a CD lying on the table. The cover was grayish-white, showing four men standing in the snow. It looked cold, quiet, and mysterious. I picked it up, put it into my portable CD player, and that was the beginning of my journey with Travis.

When I heard “Driftwood,” I don’t know why, but I felt like that piece of driftwood myself—drifting aimlessly through life.

Then came “Turn.” It felt as if a light had suddenly appeared in a damp, grey world, bringing back a sense of hope. And then the next track, “Why Does It Always Rain on Me?” Well… sorry, but I was right back in that soaking wet world again.

Finally came “Slide Show,” with the line:
“Today was the day, but only for the first time. I hope it’s not the last time.”

That feeling has stayed with me ever since—a gentle sadness mixed with hope.
After that, I began collecting every Travis album and single I could find. And I have to say, their single covers are beautiful.

It’s not easy to see Travis perform in Taiwan. They have visited twice, and I was fortunate enough to attend both shows.Seeing the four band members in person for the first time was incredibly emotional. Singing along with Travis at a live concert was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life.

I hope that one day I can finally travel to Glasgow, Scotland, and watch my favorite band perform in their hometown.

Greetings from the mountains of Taiwan.

A Travis fan for more than 23 years.
