What’s the best gig you’ve been to? Why was it special?

A particular standout was Suede in Berlin many years ago – Brett Andersons energy was off the charts

Brett still has the moves. Saw Suede at the Usher Hall and it was outstanding. Brett really puts on a show and so pleased to see the devotion of the new generation getting into it. Ruby and I are going back for some more action later this year to a Manics/Suede double header. They did it a few years ago at Edinburgh Castle, Ruby and I went and it was SO SO GOOD!

I can’t remember the year but it was the mid 90s in Ancienne Belgique concert Hall in Brussels. Travis came along and suddenly Fran called everyone to be quiet and started busking. Solo, just acoustic guitar, and voice. Goosebumps!

Travis playing Sheffield in December 2024 was a fantastic night. Great atmosphere, great songs and the stories Fran told, both sad and funny, were special and from the heart.
I didnt know what to expect that night but it was magical.

Another band is Rammstein (yes, I have a wide range of tastes in music) who I wasn’t a great fan of but went with a friend. Didnt understand a word they said (being German) but what a show. How they got the pyrotechnics past Health & Safety I will never know! 🙂

As for smaller bands, I can recommend Blue Nation. Saw them supporting Laurence Jones a few years ago and became a big fan. Great lads from Birmingham with great songs, singer had a great voice and the banter between them really showed how funny and close they were.

Absolutely best gig ever was live at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia. It was maybe a week or two after the 9/11 attacks.

I knew nothing about the band and a friend had an extra ticket. It was absolutely life changing! I was hooked on Travis for life.

Here was a super smooth cool bass player, an eccentric and lively lead guitarist, and this Mohawked punk rocker looking lead singer with a pretty vocal! And of course the drummer with the long spiked hair locking it in! A true band of rockstars.

Seeing Travis in Salt Lake City last year was truly one of the best shows ever. Got to attend a sound check and 🤯

I got to see Travis at the Theatre at the Ace hotel in Los Angeles back in November 2022 with my wife and my old New York roommate. What a great gothic theatre venue and such a brilliant set playing the whole of The Invisible Band album.

For me it was August 2007, Mexico City, Palacio de los Deportes. The setlist was one of the longest ever, they kept on playing and playing, and I just couldn’t believe it. Mind-blowing gig.

Travis at eastbourne. Fran dived in to the audience to help a lady who had passed out and the collected money for the local food Bank. I didn’t think I could love them more than I did but I was wrong. Second best gig was keane at battle abbey.

March 2004 I happened to be in Scotland. Hopped the train from Edinburgh to Glasgow to see Travis play at home. One of the best concert experiences of my life, especially that evening’s rendition of “Happy to Hang Around.”

Any Travis gig honestly. And McCartney’s gig at the stade de France in 2004 was pretty special. I also have a very fond memories of the David Byrne gig this year in Paris and the Parquet courts gig sometime in 2016 in LA, these guys had so much raw energy

Belle and Sebastian at The Vic Bar, Glasgow School School of Art. One of their first gigs. I’d known Stuart for 4 years. His best friend Ciara (person on the cover of Sinister) was the sister of my best friend Jude so we would see us in the hallway from time to time. Anyways I was not expecting what I saw. Proper genius level songwriting and the band were totally locked. Just saw them in Hollywood the other night playing that very album. So many incredible bands to have come out of our wee city.

      It’s a hard one:

Travis (my both shows experiences 1000/10) ❤️

Also, I enjoyed Oasis with Richard Ashcroft as a supported, one of the best gigs I’ve ever attended (from last year).

Another gigs I loved: U2 The Joshua Tree tour 2017 with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds as their supporters, Coldplay, Bôa, Hozier, Dua Lipa…

Cannot wait to see Jamiroquai live in September for my very-first time!

I remember seeing Travis back in the day (1997) with Longpigs and Embrace – brilliant time had. Still got my ticket stub ❤️

“An Evening With Fran Healy & Andy Dunlop: A Chronological Acoustical Journey Through The Travis Back Catalogue: Laugh Out Loud Stories, Scottish Accents, Handsome Scottish Men, Naked Torsos.”

So fortunate to have attended the Chicago show of this. It was my first time meeting Fran and Andy (after seeing Travis in concert 3-4 times; they had already secured their spot as my all-time favorite band) and they were simply the coolest and kindest. It was such a lovely and intimate show. The evening felt like a gift given to the fans. BUTTERLUMP!!!!

So many great gigs but my favourite was Brisbane 16th January 2026. First major concert for my girls and nephews. Fran interacted wonderfully with my youngest girl (wearing a Travis shirt) and my wee nephew (wearing a Rangers jersey). Fran ruffled his hair and sang in front of them for a wee while. Smiles on their faces said it all. Thank you so much lads

The last Christmas gig at the Hydro. I took my 13 year old cousin, he had no idea. As we went down the escalator he asked me who Travis was. I caught the eye of a guy similar to my age who had overheard and we both smirked at each other. Because I was looking after the wee man and had to drive him home I couldn’t have a drink, it was the first time I saw them sober and I think I enjoyed it ever more. The wee man hated Hamish Hawk, it wasn’t his cup of tea so for weeks afterwords I kept sending his Hamish videos through WhatsApp but disguised so he had to open them first. 😂😂😂😂

Any concert that didnt have the whole audience blocking your view with smartphones are my favourite ha! So I would say anything pre 2010 with the odd exception. Like it was great to start with, you got good vids and pics but you could soon look around you and ppl be watchin the gig through their phones. Recording whole songs that they will prob never look at again, safe in the haven of the storage cloud. Hey I’m old! Lol

        grumpycamel

@Tafono I know what you mean about the phones blocking your view. It’s the age we live in and I wish they would at least dim down the brightness of their screens as it is distracting.
But in contrast, I do regularly look at my videos of songs that I have taken in different concerts, just to re-live the moment so to speak. I may be the oddity out there… 🙂

@ZakMcKracken I also saw Travis at the last Christmas tour in Sheffield. We didnt know what to make of Hamish Hawk but the more we watched him the more I enjoyed his show. Hopefully he’ll wander around again, down to our neck of the woods. As for teasing your wee man, well, we have to find our joys in life from somewhere….. 😂😂😂😂

Living in rural Mississippi, I never thought I would get to see Travis play live, but I have had the amazing opportunity to see them 3 times now! My first show was in Kansas City Missouri in a casino. We got to meet them and have a pretty long conversation, and it literally was one of the most surreal moments in my life. My other favorite show was in Glasgow because seeing a band in their space is always special.

      @grumpycamel

Thank you. That’s so very kind. The wee man had lost his Dad the year prior and I could see how some of the lyrics/music was impacting him. My only ever sober Travis gig and it was the best one in the world.

I don’t think he really hated Hamish Hawk, I think he was just trying to act out like a big boy and not a tween. He was completely shocked when Fran dropped the c-bomb. So was I, he’s probably done it at others gigs but it went right over my head as I wasn’t responsible for a 13 year old 😂😂😂😂

Apparently Travis are now his favourite band along with Madness ❤️

Glen Hansard at the Grand Opera House in Belfast, October 2021.

I got married in 2019, and we’d invited Glen to sing ‘Winning Streak’ at our wedding. Unfortunately (for us) he was supporting Neil Young in Killarney that day – so as a wedding gift he said he’d guest list us for one of his shows instead. In the midst of working through the pandemic, he wrote to us (he knew we were Nurses, and he said he was worried about us) which was a real comfort at a difficult time.

Finally, towards the end of all the lockdowns and restrictions, a show in Belfast was announced. Our first gig in a world we weren’t sure would ever allow concerts again. We were guest list, and it was just Glen, his guitar, and his voice. It was like watching a master at work. It was a breath of fresh air in a world that had quite literally struggled to breath for 2 years. It was incredibly special.

When I saw Travis in Inverness, their support act hadn’t got work visas, so Travis did the support act,
then got changed for the part they were meant to play! That was ace 😀

Non Travis related gigs must be Katzenjammer, Aurora, Nothing but Thieves, Kaizers Orchestra and
      Billie Eilish 😀

Travis on The Boy tour in Pontiac, MI was absolutely incredible. They were next level that night.

Paul McCartney in Detroit at Comerica Park around 2011 with my mom who was 16 during Beatlemania was an unforgettable memory.

Oasis Reunion Tour 2025 – Toronto night 2. Biblical. Bucket list memory!

The Oasis return gigs was on another level, mine was first night at BsAs, i was waiting for them for 17 years and it was the best performance of them i had been.

Hellooo and it’s great to see message board back again
I cannot remember exactly my board name then though 🙂 I am from Turkey and travelled to Paris, UK and Milan for the gigs and cannot wait for the new ones!
I loved Newcastle gig in 2024 but Glasgow OVO Hydro 2024 was something else as Fran put it, it was like a big Christmas office party! and oh soundchecks!!

Travis at the Hydro 2024 a few nights before Christmas.

Other ones i’d mention were Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, The Killers

For me it would be any of these gigs I have attended

Keane are an absolutely brilliant live band with an amazing energy I have seen them 12 times. Tom Chaplin has an amazing voice

A-ha I have seen 4 times and they were also amazing live another one with a great energy and morten Harket has an amazing voice

Of course I do love all the Travis ones I have been too and that’s 18 I have attended since 2001. One of my favourite ones was the Alexandra palace show in December 2003 that was a great night! But I have loved every single other show that I attended your another amazingly brilliant live band!

      Prince. R.I.P
The Killers (6 times). Although after seeing them at O2 I must admit we did come out singing Travis songs and booked to see them at Rock City Nottingham on the way home. Don’t tell Brandon ha ha x

Loved both Travis gigs I’ve seen, Bridlington Spa 2004 or 2005, although think ‘The Man Who’ tour 2026 Brisbane and the slide show totally won for entertainment value! Also loved James in Brisbane 2016, Deacon Blue Liverpool 1989, Crowded House in Liverpool prob 1991. Oh and tiny Ben Folds intimate gig in Sheffield uni early 2000s. Big stadium ones – OK but love smaller venues.

One of the best concerts of my life was seeing Travis at The Agora in Cleveland, OH in February 2025. It was a lesson in hospitality – turning strangers into friends. They gave so much through that show all while Fran had a busted leg. Would love to see Travis in Scotland!
