This could turn out to be one bad SOB (similar to Ike Turner).

My in-laws live about 20 minutes from the coast so they have evacuated and are at their lakehouse, which is close to Austin. They own a rental property in Galveston but it's a condo in a bigger complex (and is on the 2nd floor) so it has a better chance of doing OK.

My parents both live about an hour away and are "sheltering in place" -as the media is saying. Most Texans prefer "hunkering down." They both boarded up their places.

No school there obviously.

Here they let school out early. I think so the schools would be clear to be evacuee centers and they could have the school buses.

Keeping my fingers crossed!

I've got friends in Houston who have come up to Dallas too. They say that the Dallas area is supposed to get some tropical storms this weekend too.

This morning, the sky was clear and blue, but when I walked outside during my lunch hour, the clouds were filling up.

Hope the Houston/Galveston and Coastal Folks are all out and safe!

Thanks. I hope my parents (and other friends) are making the right choice by staying. That's what they're being told to do. The local news is much more calm about this than the national media- in terms of saying it shouldn't be too bad.

In my mind it's for Ike Turner but the National Weather Service names the hurricanes. It's alphabetical alternating between male and female names. Apparently the names are recycled every 6 years, except when the name is retired (because the hurricane was so bad, e.g. Katrina)

Name that Hurricane

I've been keeping all eyes on the news, looks real bad so far. My family lives a good hour away from Galveston, so they've decided to just stay but are telling me that even people in their neighborhood are boarding their windows. I have a feeling I'll be on the phone a good chunk of the day and night.

I happened to be flipping the channels a couple of hours ago and saw this, LOL...

I just turned on the weather channel and was watching one of the poor guys who are being punished by being forced to stand out in the storm.

He was under some gazebo and was commenting that it was shaking. Suddenly he said, "we gotta cut this. It's not worth it."

And he walked off! I've never seen that. I bet that thing blows away at any second.

Hey there, just listening to the news. They're saying that 8 meter high waves are on their way to the Texan coast. Believe me when I say that I am thinking of you...

I'll be on my way to Glasgow in about an hour, but I hope I can catch some news at the airport.

That sucks! I wouldn't know how to deal with hurricanes.
I hope everyone's safe and that the hurricane isn't so bad.

Stay safe, Anne, Sandy, Carla (are you in Texas now?) & families. I was watching CNN this morning and it looks like a lot of people on Texas' coast have evacuated. Those reporters are nuts staying down there. The weather service said anyone who stays on the coast faces "certain death."

Hope your all safe and with your families.

This is the type of thing that I could never ever cope with.

Sometimes I'm glad that I live in the uk and that we have bad weather all year round. I much prefer that than having to deal with Hurricanes every couple of weeks!!!!
