I liked Bay City Rollers when I was around 9 years old, then the Beatles, had a short Baccara time… some 50's stuff and Matchbox, followed by some punky, new wave stuff, Soft Cell etc, then a shortish heavier time with Dio, Scorpions, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, followed by the Jam, Peter Gabriel, the Cure, the Smiths…

Yeah, pretty mixed stuff ;^)

I used to keep a diary of my favourite songs from year to year but I threw them all out =[ didn't really want to relive some of my teenage angst, was too scared I'd cringe and think nooooooooooooo, why did I write that?!

Anyway defining songs ....

Travis - Writing to Reach You/WDIAROM
The Strokes - Last Nite
The Hives - Hate to Say I Told You So
Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl
Dandy Warhols - Bohemian Like You

In my youth I listened to nothing but 50's and 60's tunes because that's the only thing my parents listened to and we didn't have our own radios...and we liked them, so it was really no bother.

Occasionally my mother would listen to the soft-rock station, so I have a fond spot in my heart for the cheesy side of the '80's.

I didn't start really listening to anything contemporary until the mid to late 90's.

I don't know how that shapes my musical tastes now though. Maybe it does in a way that I haven't figured out yet. (Everything I love now that happened during my Youth is stuff I discovered in retrospect. I was not aware at the time it happened. :)

the 50's and sixties were where it all began, pop, rock, that's when songs and styles where actually "new"....i know what you mean about the "soft" 80's, one song that i forgot to mention, that i absolutely will never get tired of time after time by cindy lauper, an artist called inoj did a cover version a few years ago that sounds really good

i was chatting with minnmess about what shaped our taste in music, what we listened to as kids that might explain what we like today. I'm curious to know what your answers are?

as embarrassing as this may be, i will admit:

i wanna sex you up-color me bad

hammertime-mc hammer

feel the vibrations-marky mark

ez-e

warren g

hang tough-new kids on the block...

and the, not so embarrassing ones:

hang the dj-the smiths

the cure

welcome to the jungle-guns and roses

depeche mode

suedehead-morrissey

don't dream it's over-crowded house

just to name a few

I love New Kids On The Block and Depeche Mode. I also have few favorites from The Cure ("The 13th" and "Lullaby".
