I am often asked in Dublin to say some Scottish words or what a particular Scottish word means, so I thought I'd post a couple here and give you a bluffer's guide.

Drooth - Thirst, as in "jesus I've a drooth on me, my mouth feels like an arab's sandal"

Numpty - idiot, one of lower inteligence as in "Yes I know him he's a fuckin' Numpty"

Bairns/Weans - Younger Children

Bawheid or Hied the Baw - see Numpty.

Pech'd or pech'd oot - tired exhausted esp. after exercise

Ken - Know as in "d'ye ken?" or "Ken whit a mean"

I will of course add to this list and would like others to do the same (Elfy, Gladders, Moray, etc) or if you are not Scottish perhaps some of your own colloquial words.

Ned - see Dubz's 'Numpty', or 'Non Educated Delinquent'. Usually clad in shellsuit with trousers tucked into socks, burberry cap, and carrying a bottle of 'Bucky' (Buckfast). Often as for '40 pence for ma bus'

you have a canadian flatmate? awesome.
This Canadian would also be confused by that.

Not a Scotish word, but an old scotish man in a tourist shop on the Royal Mile told me that i was cuter than a highland cow. Some might take offence, but i think they are adorable and took it as a compliment! (this was in context of looking at things with heiland coos (sp?) on them and me saying that the female cows were cuter bc they are fluffier. It wasnt a random Scotish pick up line, lol)

I think that's pretty standard English.

There is a road in my city called Reek Rd. that runs along a little creek. I have never gotten close enough to smell the creek, but I always wondered if they named the road Reek because the water was smelly at the time they paved the road.
