Dee Gave me the idea for this...

The National Sport in Ireland is G.A.A.(sometimes pronounced 'ga'). G.A.A. basically stands for Gaelic Athletics Association, They promote serveral sports, Gaelic Football, Hurling(fastest field game in the world), Handball(like squash without a racket), Camogie(women's hurling), Internatioal Rules and Poc Fada. The two most popular are Football and Hurling, which are played at several levels from Grass Roots to Inter-County Ending in the Massive All Ireland Finals in September. The GAA's headquarters are an 80,000 capacity stadium in Phibsboro called Croke Park or Páirc an Chrócaigh, which until recently was solely used for GAA and nothing else. so I thought I'd show you a couple of vids...

Croke Park:- http://youtube.com/watch?v=wFMUv9HzaTo

Gaelic Football:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIlsRsMMJUc

Hurling:-http://youtube.com/watch?v=AM-kB1e96CA

FAO. Irish Boardies : I'm still a bit of a blow-in here so if I missed anything, please feel free to point it out. also Haz, sorry the only clips I could find of Limrick were really bad quality.

love it!

how did you get into the gaa?

I used to play halfback in football for my school teams years ago. Used to be pretty good, although i now blame my footballing past for a dodgy knee :p

I always enjoyed watching the hurling. But I read a book called Is Shane MacGowan Still Alive about a Londoner coming over here to sell his car and tour Ireland at the same time, and in it he talks about getting to see a Compromise Rules match and it just sounded a good laugh so I went to one in 2002, then I started watching the Football on Tv, then my mate's from Glasnevin and a true Dub so started going to the games with him, his brothers and his mates.

My ex played Camogie, when she was younger, also a pure Dub so I just kinda got caugh up in the whole thing, and now I LOVE IT !!!! hahaha

was 2002 the year the jersey's got ripped to shreds in all the fights?
compromised rules has just gone mental of late.
schools have stopped bringing kids to the matches cos of all the fighting now.

Camogie, jeez, brave woman, i'm far too much of a wuss for that. those girls ud kill u at the slightest sign of weakness.
learnt all the skills and everything but never been involved in a proper game.
