Day 3 - a song that makes me happy
I've spent a lot of time thinking about this one. For me the whole point of music is that it makes you feel happier. So I could have listed dozens here, not all of them being obvious choices. But as I can't really do that, I will go with Wouldn't It Be Nice. Beach Boys generally make me happy. |

I read this too quickly and thought it said Johnny CASH! So of course I clicked, never having heard the Johnny Cash version. Hearing Johnny Nash when you're expecting Johnny Cash is hilarious. |

Day 3: a song that makes me happy.
It was easy to choose: Why Does It Always Rain on Me? Whenever I feel sad, or tired, or angry, this song never fails to make me absolutely happy. It reminds me of summer, blue sky, clouds, green grass, all these simple things we forget in everyday routine.
Funny enough, but I never liked rainy weather, it made me feel kind of depressed. But since I heard this song I DO love rain!

Day 04 (Tuesday 29th March) - a song that makes you sad
The Green Fields of France
Eric Bogle wrote this, he also wrote "And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda", you really should check out his stuff if you haven't before. This version is half sung in German which I hadn't heard before (it doesn't really work for me). The reason I find it sad is that it's about waste of a life. Thousands of men (some only boys) were shot, bombed & gassed at the bequest of complete and utter fuckwits like Haig. Who instructed his men when charging to walk across no man's land, not run, of course they were just mown down by machine gun. Whole villages/families were wiped out because at the time you could request to fight in the same unit (they thought it would be good for morale) unfortunately whole batallions were wiped out at a time leaving places with a distinct shortage of men and a huge population of widows. This pisses me off. As the song itself states, it was allowed to happen again & again, in fact it's maybe apt at a time when we're marching into yet another country.

There's a lot of them out there, but I'll go with this song, especially this version:
Bruce Springsteen - Empty Sky
The falsetto in the beginning totally does it for me...
I just want to add that Deep Purple - When A Blind Man Cries is close behind, but it leaves me with mixed feelings, the guitar solo is so f@£king epic. |

I'd have gone with Jimmy Cliff's version, but it's still a great song.

It's hard for me to think of a sadder song than
Where've You Been by Kathy Mattea.
I can't listen to this song without big tears rolling down my cheeks by the end. Even more so now with what is beginning to look like a trend in severe memory loss in my family. |

Eric Clapton - Tears in Heaven (Unplugged)
An incredibly incredibly sad and beautiful song, about Clapton's son who died at the age of four... It's one of the very few songs that will reduce me to tears every time I listen to it. |

The Drugs Don't Work - The Verve
I read somewhere that this is the saddest song in the world, it always brings tears in my eyes. It's really very sad when someone you love is ill and you know you can't do anything to relieve his pain. |

According to QI the saddest song in the world is Gloomy Sunday by Billie Holiday,
"The saddest song ever is "Gloomy Sunday" sung by Billie Holiday, also known as the "Hungarian Suicide Song". The song was originally written by Rezsó Seress, who broke up with his girlfriend. After the song became popular, they got together briefly but then she committed suicide by poisoning herself and left only a two-word suicide note that said simply "Gloomy Sunday"."
