I have another job interview this week, and it's going to be yet another disaster, because I can't really see myself working for a big consulting company*, and I think they'll agree once they've talked to me...

(*obviously I didn't apply for a consultant's position, but their communications department is probably just as competitive as the rest. Well at least it'll be interesting to see that kind of workplace once in my life ;D)

Keep an open mind, the communications dept. could be full of hippies!
If I had seen the top floor on the interview day of my first advertising agency job I would've chickened out, but as I applied for a job in the basement, there was nothing daunting about it. All second hand furniture, bearded dudes and nice people. The furniture and people got smarter the higher one climbed.

Lili, I'm sure you have a good chance, after all you got shortlisted! So obviously there are things in your CV they must like. It might be a really positive surprise! :) Fingers crossed!

She's coming back on the 1st of next month :D!. Most of my post for a few months in the 'today's news of you' thread will be boring, so I'm apologizing in advance. Actually I'm not sorry because she puts a smile on my face

yup, a headhunter/recruiter I talked to a few months ago (a friend of my aunt, who, unfortunately, specialises in engineers) said the same. It was the worst year ever even for her clientele.
It's just great, isn't it? You graduate, you're motivated and ready to start a new chapter in your life - and then, NOTHING. Not even an assistant's job. And over here, you can't even get a "good" and paid internship as a grad, because the big companies only hire students (they say it's because it's "fair" - but when I was a student and looking for an internship, they still preferred grads over students...)

My interview was terrible, by the way. And they don't pay shit. I mean, I applied for a trainee position in communications, so I wasn't expecting much, but, HEY, it's a BIG [!] international consulting company and they should at LEAST pay you enough so you can afford rent and food, right?! Plus, they don't ever employ their communications-trainees on a permanent basis after the traineeship is over. They just kick you out or offer you another traineeship. One of their trainees has been working with them for 2 years now (which means she can't find another job)... Seriously, I got so angry during the (2-hour-) interview (their "questions" were strange, too), I wanted to break if off and leave.

Sorry to hear about the interview... :( At least you got one, I'm not even getting shortlisted anymore!

It's the same in Poland - when I was still studying it was impossible to get any job experience because employers wanted grads who were flexible and available for full time positions and now all the posts are for students only because then they don't have to pay for your insurance/benefits. How very freaking convenient.

And Andrew, I'm pretty sure you need to be an UK/Ireland citizen to get any benefits.

This was the first interview I've had in months. The last one was in April, I think...
I'm avoiding some of my working friends now because they always ask me why I haven't found a job yet - "WHAT? You still haven't found a job?! That's impossible!" - which makes ME think THEY think I'm stupid or I'm not looking properly. I mean, excuse me, it's NOT my fault. A few years ago people used to tell me how great I'd be doing after graduating. Ha, Ha. Hrmph.

I was told on several occasions by the members of my family that I'm not looking properly and basically doing everything wrong because 'there are so many openings'. Ummm yeah, right, please show me where exactly. I especially love this coming from one of my cousins who has never sent a single CV in her life because she was employed by her own mother right after the graduation.

and who is the smart girl who quit her job?!
Granted, it paid like crap and made me greatly unhappy and likely would have lead to an early death, but...it was a job.

Yes, YES! Exactly. A friend of mine got every single one of her internships and her first job because her father had connections. She never actually had to apply properly. She's a lovely lovely person, but this and her "tipps" annoyed me to no end...
