Sorry, I wasn't thinking. This is definitely a cultural reference. There was an old show called The Addams Family and they had an uncle who used to lie on a bed of nails for comfort and enjoyed being stretched on "the rack." He could also light up light bulbs in his mouth. I tried to find a YouTube video with him on the bed of nails, but I couldn't.
