The Band are big Movie lovers, Fran just messaged me the other day about a Sam Rockwell film which is meant to be great: ‘Good luck, have fun, don’t die’ – just wondering who is looking forward to the new Tom Cruise movie – ‘Digger’ Directed by the guy who did the ‘Revenant’? Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘Magnolia’ is an all time classic and hopefully Tom Cruise is as Zany in this new one as he is in ‘Magnolia’ All the best, Nx

I’ve been meaning to watch The Revenant a few times but somehow never got around to it. I really liked Birdman though, which was directed by the same guy. And with Tom Cruise starring in it — definitely looking forward to that one! 😋

Hey Neil! I am looking forward to “Digger” from that Mexican guy who has directed very good movies – Alejandro González Iñarritu 🇲🇽. I really like his whole filmography, all the way to “Amores Perros”, his debut feature – if you haven’t see it, I totally recommend.
I recently watched “Origin”, based on the book “Caste: The Origins of our Discontents”, and is about how caste systems have shape human divisons, the foundation to racism and institucional opression. It unbelievable how the author finds interconnections between different regions and times regarding caste systems and how certain groups of people are treated (and mistreated) in that way. I think is a great films to understand our human history and why things are the way they are right now.

The film which has not left me is Aftersun. Charlotte Well’s feature debut. When I first saw it, I woke the next morning realising what it was I had seen. I watched it again. I’ve seen it 5 times now and its impact has not diminished. I think it’s the closest a film maker has come to making a film that hits you like a great song. It felt like a new way of storytelling with pictures. It’s a film where nothing happens yet everything happens.

I had this with Zach Braff’s ‘Wish I Was Here’. I love that he crowd-funded it so he had final cut. It is a terrific work. Mandy Patinkin is wonderful in it. And sn incredible soundtrack too.

Aftersun is incredible Fran. I love movies where you struggle to explain the plot to people, and not because it’s complicated, like you say it’s just that nothing happens and yet everything does. Another that affected me like that was The Holdovers, just such a warm and tender movie that I could watch endlessly. See also Lost in Translation

I do like Sam Rockwell particularly in Jojo Rabbit, a quirky little film set in WW2 with Taika Waititi as Hitler. Film that got me sobbing – All of us Strangers with Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal. A beautiful love and ghost story. And finally a rewatch – The Machinist with Christian Bale – psychotic thriller with Christian undergoing EXTREME weight loss for the part.

The machinist is one of the most dark thriller I’ve ever seen but it’s worth seeing.
Another film from a few years ago that is beautiful is THIS MUST BE THE PLACE by Sorrentino starring Sean Penn and It’s stuck in my mind ever since. It’s a film that deals with a lot of emotions. It explores how everyone deals with a significant loss, the success that can lead to isolation, revenge as redemption, and the searching for meaning in a disconnected world.
SPOTLIGHT by Tom McCarthy also is a very good movie even if punches you in the stomach

oooh, I love this topic! I need to think about it and come back, but I wanted to leave my anecdote about Magnolia. My first job was at a movie theater, and I was working there when Magnolia came out! My coworker rented out (well, he got our manager to put on the projector) a screen for after work, and we had a private screening of Magnolia for a date. I was 15 and had to pretend I understood that film…I still don’t know if I do…but it’s a classic. 1999 was arguably the best year ever for film and I feel so lucky I can say I worked at a cinema during that time.

I’m seeing some good👏 recommendations around here for things to watch. I’ll offer mine, but it’s at your own risk.
Grave of the Fireflies (1988) It completely floored me, and I don’t have the heart to watch this movie again because it won’t feel the same as the first time I saw it
Soul (2020) oh nice a animation movie ! but wait is for adults?
Slotherhouse (2023) i think is my kind of humor. is good to watch with someone who will try to find logic and reality in the movie too see the reaction, I observed everything, and the events of the movie seemed completely normal.
The room (2003) Oscar losses this masterpiece in acting and editing

One of my fav topics ever. Paul Thomas Anderso is my favourite director and I believe that ‘Magnolia’ and ‘There will be blood’ are pure cinema. I’m completely in love with ‘Suspiria’ (2018) and ‘Hereditary’ but I’m nore a terror suspense film fan.
Also ‘Mulholland Drive’ (so bizarre)-
Since ‘The Exorcist’, ‘Hereditary’ is the only movie that truly scared me. there’s a great one called ‘Speak No Evil’ that I recommend.

I Swear is one of the greatest films of recent years (despite one accent which was been slagged enough but my goodness).
Otherwise The Silence of the Lambs, The Apartment, Sweet Sixteen, Judgment at Nuremberg, His Girl Friday, Jaws, Red Road, The Lives of Others, ET, Inherit the Wind, Insomnia (the original Norwegian one).
Also, City Lights is on the iPlayer. You’re welcome 🙂

At the cinema recently: Toy story 5 – considering it’s a kids movie there were only a handful there, the cinema was full of adults. Michael- I went to see it twice, it was very moving,
