as there seems to be a fair few american folk on here, i thought id appeal for some advice or tips.

im flying over to san francisco at the end of the month for a couple of weeks sight seeing. the plan is to fly into san fran, have got a hostel booked for a couple of nights, then a night at the phoenix and a gig at The Regency Centre on the 1st.

after that, I dont need to be anywhere until 5th, when I plan to be in anaheim for another gig. im thinking Id like to see a sunset in santa cruz on the way. (see if i can catch me a vampire). i plan to then fly from LA to mexico then from there fly back to san francisco in time for my flight home.

i dont drive and i want to play it a bit free-spirited, ive only booked my first 4 nights accommodation so I can decide where to go, what to do, on a day to day basis.

so really - the advice is, is this fairly easy to do, any knowledge of websites with train or coach prices - can i just turn up on a day and say "i want to go here" or is that going to cost me a small fortune. any good websites for when im there, booking my next accommodation place - or is it pretty easy to turn up and ask for a room for the night in a motel or something. also - what kind of price are they.

i know its a big ask, and im not really fretting, Im quite excited - but late at night when i think about this freespirited approach, i get a bit nervous and start debating with myself how ridiculous im being so Id really quite like some enthusiastic encouragement and reassurance. if at all possible!!!

thanks in advance.

I think this might start an inter-California war.
Go at it Goosey and Ric.
Don't ask Kayte (turtleneck) for breakfast advice in LA though.

Hi Jabbsy! You must be going to see James! My husband and I are going to the show in Anaheim. :) You will love San Francisco...there is so much to do and see there! I'm not sure what to tell you about trains and such...but you could check out www.amtrak.com for prices there. I've never traveled that way. We always fly or drive. Southwest Air is a pretty cheap airline. You could probably find an internet special that gets you from San Francisco to Los Angeles for as little as $39 each way....in fact I just saw that price today. The website is www.southwest.com. Trying to get last minute tickets is most likely going to cost you more than if you reserve ahead of time. As far as hotels go...you will probably be okay. You can go to www.expedia.com or www.travelocity.com to find something within your range. Hotel prices really just depend on how nice it is. They can range from $39-$115 a night and up.

Will you be traveling by yourself?

I think what you are doing sounds like a lot of fun! Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. Like Kristy said...we've got a few resident experts on California here who could probably give some insight too. Ric, heyjude, and Lindsey are all located in the Sf area and Goosey is in LA.

thank you very much for the info. i am indeed off to see james, and i am indeed travelling alone. thus needing cheap as hotels - so thats good. ta for that. you reckon id be ok looking on those sites when i get there?

also - those flights sound great - shame though cos going all the way there by plane, i really wanted to travel across country and see a bit of it - thus train or coach. i know you dont get to see it all properly... but just a passing glance would make me feel like ive travelled it y'know!

im at work, so no sound for now...well, i have sound, just not going to use it.
Are they out currently or an older band? Well, obviously they are out currently if they are touring, but ignore that.

haha @ no "sound"

(cos thats one of their songs for the uninitiated)

theyre an old band, reformed recently... they did that sit down song... and laid "this bed is on fire..." umm.... come home.... how was it for you... born of frustration... sound... if you haven't heard any of those songs, theres no point telling you their more recent ones.

Trust me: if nothing else, you've heard Sit Down. Google it. Everyone who ever owned a radio has heard Sit Down. It's anthemic.

Great band. Worth a listen. And maybe even a transatlantic ticket :)
