unite and take over....:-p (big smiths fan)
So i have an appointment today to give blood to the red cross (the only organization i trust enough) it seems that my o- blood type is in high demand...again. I'm curious to find out how many of my fellow Travis fans give blood or have given blood. Of all my friends and family, I'm the only one who would even think about going under the needle. It burns and leaves me feeling like death but i actually kinda like doing it |

Interesting question....
I give blood on a regular basis. I'm O negative - which is the universal donor. They usually really beg for it around the holidays when there are going to be more accidents.
I get stalked even more because mine is even more special. Not only am I O negative but I am also CMV negative. CMV is a virus you either have or don't have in your system. It's generally harmless to adults but if they were to give blood to a baby that was CMV positive it would be extremely detrimental to them.
No lie, sometimes I have a voicemail that says, "Hi, this is so and so from the blood bank. We're running low on baby blood and were wondering if you could come in sometime soon." HOW can someone like me (a total softie/cheesebag) turn down that sort of plea???
Once they even called saying there was an emergency, that a baby needed surgery and could I come right away. They took it and had all these special tags on it. I think they were going to test it ASAP and that blood was going to be used within a few hours. It kind of freaked me out but I also felt good that I knew that I was helping someone out.
But really anytime you give blood you are helping someone out. It doesn't matter what your type is. They need it all. |

wow, that is so cool, I didn't know there was a specific kind of o-, i thought i was special! i will definetly ask if i have the cmv disease in my blood or not. they have never actually asked for "baby blood" from me but they do call aaaallllooootttt, so maybe. it's funny too cuz they call me with blocked numbers and it's always someone different (usually a girl) and they offer me stuff like entries into raffles and coupons for icecream. it's good to know that there are ppl out there working hard to get others to donate, and it's good to know that there are ppl out there who give and like to help others, i knew you were a good person weirdmom :-) |

I used to give blood regularly, but I've been denied the last couple of times due to low iron...I guess I just have to make sure to eat some liver beforehand (yeah right!).
Blood type: A+ |

That sucks, a lot of my female friends are anemic and have low iron problems. i see how they suffer with it. but atleast you try to give blood a lot of ppl just don't care or are afraid. |

CMV is just a virus they screen for. I'm pretty sure you'd know if it wasn't in your system because they make a REALLY big deal about it - at least for me.
Here they have stuff where you can earn points towards prizes. But it's mainly stuff I don't care about - like coffee mugs. I don't want to keep track of my points so I always decline the papers they try and give me.
Just give me my cookies afterwards and I'm good. (sometimes there is ice cream or T-shirts) |

The Red Cross used to do blood drives at my high school twice a year. I could never donate because I was--get this--UNDER WEIGHT! Ahahaha! Aaaaaahahaha!
After I had fattened up a bit, they had a Red Cross blood drive at work. I signed up and donating blood just didn't jive with my body somehow. **DISCLAIMER**I do not want this story to discourage anyone from giving blood. Lots and lots of people do it every day with no problems whatsoever, this was just my own personal experience.
They had everything set up in the basement at work and I went on my lunch hour. The actual donation went fine. When I got up to walk over to the cot, I blacked out. Two nurses had to grab me. I was blind! I could hear but everything was black. Very weird. If they had not grabbed me I would have fainted straight away. I lay down on the cot for a few minutes and they brought me the cookies and juice. After a while, it was time to go back to work and they needed the cot. I tried to get up and the same thing happened again. So I lay there for a while longer. Tried to get up, blacked out again. Finally I got to where I could sit up. My lunch hour was long over, my coworkers had no idea where I was. After 45 minutes, I was able to put myself on the elevator and drag myself back into the office where I put my head down on the desk and tried not to vomit. I was so dizzy. The boss offered to let me go home, but I was downtown and there was no way I could drive myself back home. I was toast for the rest of the day. That's why I've never donated again. If it was for someone in desperate need and they were begging for it, of course I would, but I don't think my blood type is anything rare and I just can't go through all that on a regular basis. |

Yeah!they have that here too, i can win some crappy looking cooler with superheroes on it or a windbreaker with those same lame looking superheroes, a girl and a guy. if i give 4 times during the year i get that stuff but i usually give 2 to 3 times a year depending on how busy i am when they set up in my area. now if they offered dodgers tickets, i would totally be there 4 times a year :-P but seriously, the cookies and juice are good enough for me too |

my mum does, cos she's O-, which they always want cos it's not very common. I'm 0+ which is common, so I should really give... but since i've a stupid auto-immune blood disease where i need injections, no one (even my doctor) knows if it's ok for me to give.
You're good to do it voluntarily! I always feel blarg after only a blood test!

I donated blood twice in my life. Once last year and once this year. The thing is my blood pressure tends to be very low, so both times they had to give me extra sugar and a second breakfast in order to let me be a donor.
Everything went fine both times afterwards.
I'd do it more often but I tend to be anemic so I can't do it much.
I didn't know they called people to donate blood. I think they don't do that in Argentina. |

They only call you if you've donated in the past so it's not completely random. You can ask them to stop. I actually did because whatever service they were using was truly starting to harass me. They were calling every single night (I could see on the caller ID) and if I answered they wanted me to schedule an appointment right then and there. It was too much.
I go regularly but it is still on my terms and my schedule. |
