Yay, one happy boardie here!! My husband has agreed to take me to New York next year to celebrate a big birthday (ending in 0 and shall say no more) I've wanted to do this for years so I'm sooo chuffed *dances around the room*
Question is : when is the best time of year to go?
I say pre-Christmas with the illuminations etc, iceskating ie very romantic. He says summer so he doesn't freeze his arse off!!
Any other advice for planning this trip is much appreciated, thanks.

oh, how exciting!!!! I heart NY!!!! I was just there in May, and it was a lovely time to be there. The weather was perfect...not too hot and not cold at all. One of my favorite things to do there was go through Central Park. There is soooo much to do there. How long will you be there?

Lucky you! NYC is one of my favorite places. I've been there four times (once as the 2nd part of my honeymoon) - once after Thanksgiving and three times in the summer.

I would vote 1st or 2nd week of December. The Christmas stuff is amazing and so pretty. Sure it's cold but most of what you'd want to do would probably be inside.

The summer is nice though for things like hanging out in Central Park and just generally walking around the city.

I'm already really excited about this which is daft because I'm not going until 2009. Hopefully we'll be able to go for about 5 days (any shorter and it won't be worth the trip across the Pond) I love the idea of going to Central Park - it looks huge!

yay Anne someone who agrees with me. My birthday is actually in December so it would be perfect and I just want that lovely Christmassy atmosphere. Blimey, I think I've been watching too many girly films, LOL!

Ok girls help me make a list of MUST places to visit and things to see :
1) Central Park - iceskating? One of those horse & carridge rides?
2) Shopping - where?
3) Empire State Building - worth the hike to the top?
4) Where to stay - hotels seem very expensive in the city. Is it worth staying further out? Isn't there a tax thing to consider as well?

if ur more of a christmas festive person, go winter time, if not then go for the summer seasons, the less you bring there the more you can bring back, my experience lol, and plus the fountains and stuff are on during the summer time, so its always more fun that way IMO. I stayed Best Western last time, which is a few blocks from broadway street, its a decent price but they cant seem to fix their poor wireless problem, so its up to you =D

5 days would be a great amount to see most of what you'd want to see. Central Park is absolutely massive. That would be the one downside to going in the winter- the trees' leaves will have fallen and the grass will be gross. Though it could be pretty if there is snow on the ground.

And I stand by my Christmas vote. It's as pretty as you've seen in movies.

Here is one tip to store away: the Metropolitan Museum of Art is a must-see. I cannot stress this enough. So here is my tip: you don't have to pay full admission of $3,000 (or whatever it is these days). If you look at the fine print you'll see that it's merely a donation "suggestion." You could pay $1 and they'd let you in.

Also we got a "Go Card" when we went to Chicago and it really saved us quite a bit of money on admission to museums and other things- even discounts to restaurants. I just looked on the site and they don't have as good a deal for NYC but perhaps check back next year and they'll have even better deals.

I already reckon that we'll be going with at least one empty suitcase, LOL! Thanks for the tip about Best Western. Does it get very hot in the summer because I can't cope with very high temperatures?

Ooooh thanks. I'm determined to plan this properly so we get the most out of our time there - hence the need for tips from people who've already been.
The kids won't be coming to NY with us so we'll get to enjoy the nightlife too. Broadway shows any good or just a load of hype?

One of my friends has just come back from her trip to New York and she said she almost died from the heat so if I were you, I'd go in the Winter.
