Ok, as one of the car owners in my circle of friends, this is something thats causing me a problem today. Went away camping this weekend and I gave two friends a lift home. It was an appreciable distance, such that I used a lot of fuel and had to refil the car.
One of them offered me petrol money before we got into the car, and thanked me for the lift home.
The other took the lift, got out of the car and went home, offering no petrol monet. Since this is the second time he's done that to me, I called him out on it this time. He said "Well if you wanted petrol money, I figured you'd have asked".
So who's the onus on? I've always thought it was the responsibility of the passenger to thank the driver and offer up out of politeness and common courtesy. Or should the driver finish up, and taxi like just reel of the price?! I always found that to be difficult and presumtious
So how does everyone handle it?? |

I think the passenger should offer. To not is just unacceptable. |

If I'm asking for a ride I offer , when I'm giving a ride I let them offer unless it's a habitual thing then I say throw down for some gas |

I always think it is the passangers resposibility (mostly be im too timid to ask..even when friends have said "if you want gas money and i havent offered, please tell me.") Generally, if it a short distance, or someone who gives me rides sometimes too, i dont really care and consider it even, but when it is a long distance or i repeatedly drive someone, it is only fair that they offer money. I do when someone else drive me (or buy their meal, or pay for parking, or something).
Last winter i drove an extra hour and a half out of my way bc my friend didnt want to take the train really late, had to stay over and then drive an hour and a half home the next morning and she didnt offer me anything. yes, i stayed at her house for the night, but it was her parents house, they had a spare room and all it cost them was a half cup of coffee! Oh and while we were together I probably drove for 2 hours that day, into the US, and i think we maybe split parking and each paid our own dinner, ticket (we were there for a hockey game) etc. So, maybe 400km, and she offered me nothing. i was super annoyed but didnt want to look bad and ask. K, long story, sorry.
Passanger should offer! |

Agree the passenger should offer. Did they hear the other person offer? Because that makes it even ruder if they witnessed that and didn't go, "oh that applies to me too."
Maybe make it clearer from now on with that person. |

i like when people start conversations with "if you can drive we can split gas." always makes it easier. I think from now on for long trips i should throw it out at the begining "it will be cheaper if we all go togther and chip in for gas." yup, passive aggressive! |

Hey, I learned a new word! Onus!
Of course it is the passenger's responsibility to offer. That's just good manners.
Post 3000? I need to shut up. |

I don't allow passengers. They're alway screaming, "Slow down! Slow down! You're gonna get us killed!" I don't need that. |

Wo-hoo - 3000! Never shut up. It'd be the poorer without you.
On the perol front - long journey passenger stumps up, short journey passenger pays parking, or buys coffee or lunch. Otherwise passenger never gets a lift again! |
