To start off, I've never seen Travis live ever before. Not even Youtube clips (unless you count that Ali G segment live lol). I was really surprised tonight (Taipei), my friend and I are leaving for college again pretty soon (me back to NY, and him to CT), this was a great chance to us to really spend time together. Upon my first hearing of Travis, I got the general feeling that they might have been a really chill acoustic band, but I was really proven wrong tonight. Before the gang rocked it out with Selfish Jean as the opener, my buddy and I were like, why Do-Re-Mi from the Sound of Music playing, but that was a funny twist to the concert, its all Travis's style I gues. I haven't been a fan for very long, but I got my copy of The Boy with No Name, and instantly fell in love with Closer and One Night. One Night wasn't played tonight but Closer obviously was (I don't think they can get away anywhere without playing it now lol). The new material played included J.Smith, Something Anything, and Song to Self. As I remember Fran saying (something like)"Everything sounds a little rockier live...We wrote this album on electric guitars so it's gonna sound a whole lot rockier!" It was more than rockier, J. Smith sounds AMAZING live, I wasn't too familiar with Something Anything but I caught a bit of the lyrics. Song to Self is gonna really be one of the best songs released this year, I know it, its such a great hooking song.
So, what made this night so memorable?
-Well, I was on the 1st level west wing so I hoped that Fran saw me waving my phone or even my black CBGB shirt, I felt like he mighta glanced at my direction once or twice!
-Fran rocking so hard that he disconnected his acoustic's cord (in Sing I think? correct me if I'm wrong)
-Andrew jumping off the stage and rocking out like no tomorrow
-Seeing my friend getting his socks rocked off by our first rock n'roll experience
-Hearing Dougie's voice alone!
-getting some decent shots of the concert, despite being asked 2-3 times by one of the vest people to put it away (lol, yes, New Yorkers do not conform =P)
-hearing all my favorite songs live
-Clothes clothes clothes interlude in Good Feeling (Wow. Was I surprised to hear that one or what)
Well I can go one for the rest of the night, but its almost 2:30 am here in Taipei, I'll leave everyone to have their own Travis experience!
To Travis & Crew: I REALLY HOPE TO SEE YOU PERFORM LIVE IN NEW YORK SOOON! Looking forward to the new record! Hopefully I'll get to write or work with you guys someday, I've really had My Eyes Wide Open tonight.
Peace, Love & Rock n' Roll,
-G.Wong (Ithaca College & Taipei)
