Isn't it always so disappointing when there are some really talented local bands that never seem to "make it" outside of your city or region? I saw some discussion on the board today about the Pixies, and I was really lucky to be a young twentysomething when the Pixies first came out in Boston. This was long before they became living legends, and I would go to see them in dingy basement clubs with my friends. In any event, I haven't been part of that scene in a long time, but for every band like the Pixies, there are 200 other talented bands that never catch on. Below are some of my favorites from "back in the day" in Boston, along with some suggested download tracks. Thought that some of you might enjoy discovering some great new, old music (if you can find it). Most of them have profiles on www.allmusic.com:
Buffalo Tom
- Taillights Fade, Larry, Soda Jerk, Sunday Night
Bill Janovitz (singer from Buffalo Tom - AMAZING voice)
- Girl's Club
Big Dipper
- All Going Out Together, Love Barge
Mighty Mighty Bosstones (before they were famous)
- Where'd You Go?, It Can't Hurt, Guns & the Young
Blake Babies
- I'm Not Your Mother, Out There
Juliana Hatfield
- Everybody Loves Me But You
Throwing Muses
- Not Too Soon, Counting Backwards, Green
Galaxie 500
- Fourth of July, Blue Thunder
Luna
- California (All the Way), Tiger Lily
Dumptruck
- Back Where I Belong
Morphine
- Cure for Pain, Candy
Lemonheads
- Rockin Stroll, Confetti, It's a Shame About Ray, Rudderless
Cavedogs
- Bed of Nails
Del Fuegos
- Don't Run Wild, I Still Want You
The Modern Lovers (before my time but well worthwhile)
- Roadrunner (how many bands can say that they had a song covered by the Sex Pistols??)

Funnily enough I made a mix of Glasgow bands who are lesser known earlier this month
Hopefully this'll work for non-multiply users but:
Glaswegians Only |

Yeah - Glasgow is an amazing music city. I can't imagine how many great unknown bands there are. |

There's also a ton of ones who think they're great but it's painful to watch. And of course they frequently end up being the support acts at shows here.
If I never have to see Glasvegas darken a stage again I will die happy |

Hah! That's true, I'm sure. I've seen plenty of those bands myself. Glasvegas is an awesome bad name, though. |
