It's a bit pathetic really....I'm handing my notice in tomorrow but my boss scares me to death. She's extremely unnaproachable and I'm absolutely dreading having to say "Can I have a word please?" and then hand my resignation letter over. Anyone got any tips to help me stay calm and get through it ok without looking like a dithering idiot?!!

i dont know how good i am with advice, but...you are resigning, so soon you wont have to deal with her! All you have to do is get through tomorrow and the hard part is done! You are free from unapporchable mean boss lady!
I dont know your situation, or why you are leaving, but start it off with some good things so she isnt mad or thrown off. "Ive really enjoyed my time here and learned a lot, but i think it's time that i move on..." or whatever fits in your situations. Just rehearse a little so you are prepared!
or...drink!

Resigning on a Tuesday? I'd always go for Friday! I think it's better to have it on her desk when she gets in, or on her desk waiting after lunch. That way she can read it without you there in front of her. Chances are, she'll just take it in stride and say something like, "I'll be sorry to see you go, but I understand why you want to leave," or something similar. People quit all the time. Life goes on. It's business. It's rare that a boss gets really upset and tells you, "Forget about the two week notice, just get your box of junk from out of your desk and hit the road!"
Do you need a higher paying job to make the rent on that palace flat?

I agree. That's the best way to do it, put the letter on their desk. You won't feel as uncomfortable about it.

Good luck with it.

:)

Thanks for your advice minnmess, I think it sounds a good idea to start it off by saying good things, even if I am lying as I've absolutely hated every minute working there!!

Kayte! I'm hanidng my notice in on a Tuesday as I have to give one calendar month which means my last day at work will be Friday 8th August. And, I might be wrong but I don't think it's acceptable here in England to leave a letter of resignation on the boss's desk, I dunno, whenever I've resigned from previous jobs I've always handed it over in person and explained things. This is why I'm getting so panicky, I have to actually tell her face to face!!

And yes, I need a better job to fund my expensive tastes now I'm living in a palace!! :p

Laura, I am really glad to hear that you are quitting. Did the baked goods give you the courage? ; )

I was also going to suggest the "throw the letter on her desk while she's away" method but apparently you can't do that over there. Here that is definitely the most common method. But I guess we don't have Esteban here to tell everyone to grow a pair.

Anyway, I second minnmess's suggestion to practice some speech. That'll help. And you can just focus on the fact that you're moving and not have to go into the gory details of your hatred on top of that. It's also important to not burn any bridges even if you hate her and the whole place. But you don't strike me as someone who is going to go off on her so it should be fine.

You just need to get through those uncomfortable 5-10 minutes and then it'll be over.

Good luck!

Banana bread always helps! I made some on saturday and have eaten...WAY too much of it.
The put-the-letter-on-the-desk tenchique seems kinda random to me. Especially if the boss has no idea that you are thinking of leaving, then this doesnt seem like the best approach.
Maybe it depends on the environment you are in though. I guess if it is a big place with less interaction between everyone, it makes more sense, but im in a small office and that would seem really out of place here.

Yeah, I'm in a small laboratory/office and her desk is practically opposite mine. I don't think she has any idea that I'm thinking of leaving! Don't think she'll be best pleased cos they're already really short-staffed and are having trouble recruiting. EEk!!

Well if she is so unapproachable maybe for your sake she'll just not even be interested in talking about it.

So she doesn't know that you're moving? That'll be a surprise but it's not like she can get angry at you for that. She might be stressed that she'll be even more short-staffed and maybe she'll be horrid to you but at least you can count down to frrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeedom!!!!!!!!!!!!
