that's really very subjective
I like odd ones that are spelt strangely
Aislin (said Ashlynn)- girl
Cerys- girl
Taliasin -(boy)
Iolyn - boy (said Yo-lin)
Iestyn - boy (said Yes-tin) |

I think it's best to choose something that's pretty typical for your area/country, not too exotic, not too common, either.
My name is an odd one here, and it's caused me a lot of trouble. After marrying an englishman it's been a bit easier, everybody just assumes I'm a foreigner and is delighted that I speak Finnish so well...
So, my advice is to pick a name that is not overtly trendy (so that the child won't have 5 class mates with the same name) but not too strange, either. I'd sick with a name that everybody around you know how to pronounce without you giving them a lesson first. Of course if you have a favourite grandparent, you might consider giving the child a name after him/her.
I was nearly given a name of an eldery relative (another odd one!), but at the last minute my parents decided that she wasn't that nice, and gave me another name instead.
I know a girl who was given a very Swedish sounding name (her dad's first language is Swedish), but who speaks very little Swedish. She's had a lot of trouble with eldery Swedish speaking ladies coming to her at work and expecting service in Swedish. |
