After having a desktop for years, I'm plunging into the new world of laptops. Problem is, I haven't a clue what to get. Are Macs preferred or not? What are the pros/cons for all of them in general? Cheers if you got any info. :)

I use a Mac at work and have a Dell at home. Generally, all news organizations use Macs because they're supposedly better for graphic design and layout. I don't think they're very user friendly though. :/

Are you serious?

I think Macs are VERY user friendly. They're just different to what anyone who uses a PC is used to. I found it difficult when I switched over to a Mac simply because I couldn't believe things were so simple.

To answer the original post, Macs are fantastic for anything creative (music, photos, video, that kind of thing) and make projects something you enjoy rather than them being a chore. So I suppose it comes down to what you intend to do with it.

I'd get a Mac. I only have a heavy duty desk version, but I'd love to have a laptop, as well. Fran's got one, too!

I'm of the opinion it's the same with most things, try them both out, research them fully, look at all the parameters including cost, size, weight, style, etc. then make a decision on what you think is best for you.

Sorry not much help but I find you always run into trouble buying things "blind"

I dont like macs. We had to use em in our Music classes, hated the fuckers. They are like giant ipods, I don't like ipods either.

Mac pros: Easy to use, not prone to viruses.
Mac cons: Software is more expensive.

I love my macbook - garageband, iphoto, imovie etc are all cool programs you get free with a mac. And the standard macbook is nicely portable too.

However, I'd suggest its best to get a mac only if you still have some access to a PC - because there's a lot of software (particuarly games) that are only PC compatible. ...Although you can put windows on a mac, as I've done. Providing you have a copy of windows XP (or Vista?), it's pretty easy to install so that you have access to both operating systems. 'tis very useful.

My sweeping generalisation of the day.

Mac owners = smug bastards with an artificially inflated sense of superiority.
