howdy ol' wise wanderers of the mighty land we know as TravisVille...
yesterday in my fitness class my teacher (who is a lazy pain in the ass who has only lectured 2 times this whole semester. every other class was either canceled or we watched movies not dealing with fitness) was talking about the chapter on STDs. i raised my hand to asked a quick question on BV (bacterial vaginosis, which is just lingo for overgrowing of the natural bacteria), since she thought of it as a STD. she was in mid-sentence about crabs when she motioned to address my question. she then addresses me with "oh, so do you have crabs???"
i was stunned. not only was this a rude thing to ask a person, even if she was joking, she did it in public! i'm 19, in a room of cute guys, and she goes and asks me about my health history!
i, of course, rebutted my question and sulked into my chair. she laughed and wanted me to ask it anyway, but i refused. another student tried to sway the tension by challenging the topic and saying that crabs isn't exactly a STD, as she contracted it from a hotel bed. still, i was hurt and ashamed.
i told my dad, who totally blew up and demanded for me to contact the head of the department. today i tried, but she wasn't in, so i emailed her instead explaining the situation and that i wanted a public apology without any affect on my final grade.
was this right? i'm still unsure. maybe i overreacted???
nothing better than listening to "my eyes" to soothe the soul. |

....i think that was an appropriate way to handle it. i certainly have a mouth on me and would have settled the matter then and there but your dad's suggestion works too. ;) |

I am hoping she was trying to be funny but yeah, I think that's pretty inappropriate and a lot of people would be upset and/or embarrassed by that.
I think it was good to ask for an apology. I hope she will do that and isn't a jerk about it. |

we'll see. i haven't heard back from the prof. or the head of department... eek. i hate it when crap like this happens because i want to stick up for myself, but not be such a pain in the ass all of the time. really, every once in a while is fine though. i'm cool with being a pain in the ass every so often lol. |

It's a balance but at this point in your life it's probably better to stand up for yourself more than not.
And really after this semester (which is, what, four more weeks?) will you even see this person again? So what if she thinks you're a pain? |

This thread reminds me of this weeks episode of Desperate housewives! Lots of crabs in there! |

This is a professor? I don't care if it was a joke, it's HIGHLY inappropriate and I think you did the right thing. Whether she gives you an apology or not, I think you should still contact the department so that the people above her know about it, especially since you mentioned she's a crap teacher anyway, cancels class all the time and shows lame movies unrelated to the subject matter of the course. I sometimes feel like professors forget students have to pay big bucks. I always liked to get my money's worth and learn something. |

I agree, that's extremely inappropriate on your professor's part. I would have also felt awkward and had a million things that I wanted to say back at her- or more likely just DUMBFOUNDED by her general rudeness.
It's definitely good that you stuck up for yourself and wrote her an e-mail! She should be feeling pretty stupid now, and if she does not apologize than she's just not worth any more of your worry.

tee hee. There's something about the word 'Vaginosis' that brings out the 12 year old inner school boy mentality in me.
Anyway, I'd give them a piece of my mind. imagine if it were the other way round, putting your hand up and asking your lecturer if they had crabs. |
