I had heard it mentioned once or twice, (much like Kool Ade). So I thought I'd look it up....Crisco check out the recipe, no wonder there are 4 out of 10 people obese in the USA. I got fatter just thinking about that pizza.

You don't have shortening in the UK? Or Kool-Aid?

It's called vegetable shortening. Does it count as a vegetable?

i wouldn't count it as a veggie!!! yeah a lot of us americans are pretty chubby and i'll be the first to admit that americans are built on money, time management, and pure laziness (most of the time). our country really annoys me sometimes.
yeah it was great when we all teamed together for the 9/11 tragedy, but our government is a piece of shit right now and our economy is flushing down the toilet. i really would love to move to a different country, but i'm a new yorker through and through.

I was out shopping on Sunday and I really would have to disagree with the 4/10 statistics. It's more like 7/10! I'm no lightweight, but I have to say that I was feeling downright slim next to some of these people.

Why is vegetable shortening white? I was wondering this the other day. I know of no pure white vegetable. What vegetables do they use?

Whats crisco? That website doesn't work for me. I thought it was the stuff you used to fix your roof, but I think thats Creosote.

We have fat people in the UK too Dubz. Especially fat children.

Although, when I was in Disneyland in Florida I saw a family of obese people in motorised karts going round the place. I felt sorry for them, because I thought the whole family was disabled. Until they got to the front of the line and the whole family got off their individual karts, walked around and then got on the ride. They were just too lazy/obese to spend thte whole day on their feet!

Ha ha! Crisco is a brand name of vegetable shortening, like a solidified hydrogenated oil. You can use it sometimes in place of butter for cookies and various other foods, mainly goodies. I can't think of anything I use it for, other than cookies. It makes the cookies less crisp than butter and I'm a "soft & chewy" cookie person. And when I say cookie, I mean UK biscuit. I think it was mainly invented to take the place of butter or lard--a vegetable fat, rather than an animal fat.

it is white because of the air they whip into it, more than likely. i know they use a lot of corn and soy when it comes to crap like that.

yeah crisco really has no use other than in baking. people who are lactose intolerant probably use it too. it is supposed to be less in fat and whatever, but really it is an unnatural product and is just really gross lol. the cookies are cool though. i love 'em hot and chewy myself lol!

There are a lot of contributors to childhood obesity. A big one is larger food portions and kids drinking way more sodas than they used to. Hubs and I were discussing straw sizes. When we were kids there were two straw sizes at McDonald's. A small one for drinks and a larger one for milk shakes. Now it's just one big honking straw. What used to be a "small" is now "child size." Child size used to be smaller yet. I don't remember snacks being forced upon us all the time when I was a kid either. You ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner and that was it. Maybe an apple after school.

Additionally, kids can't walk to and from school like they used to because people (probably erroneously, but maybe not) think that it's too dangerous because of all the creepy werido child molesters. Also, some places don't have neighborhood schools like they used to, so it may be just too far to walk. Just like, you can't really turn your kids out in the neighborhood to play and wander and roam like we did. I don't know if there really is more danger out there, or if we just perceive it that way, but you'd probably be charged with neglect if you let your kids run around free like we did.

i know if i walked everywhere from my house, i would have feet like a hobbit and be as skinny as a pole! i like 30 minutes from campus and there is no bus transportation. my mom's genetics for obesity are bad and it sucks being on medication because it makes losing weight harder. americans want easy answers like medication and quick food for fast results and it just hurts us in the end. but i must say, some european foods can be high in fat and sodium as well. it just depends on your portions, exercise, genes, and determination.

Walking is part of life in other countries. They have public transportation, which we seriously lack here, but they at least WALK or ride a bike to the train or bus stop.

The US has such a "car culture." If you were seen walking to and from the grocery store with a little cart for your stuff, people might wonder what you're doing. Like only homeless people walk around with carts. There's that subtle stigma for walking, I think. Especially here in the Motor City. The cities are just set up for driving, not walking, and public transport is almost non-existent.

exactly. my town doesn't have any public transportation or even sidewalks. and it is a stigma to be seen walking on a busy road or something. meanwhile, it is normal for people in NYC to walk an average of 5 miles a day getting around without a car. i wish!!! my old school had my dorm room on the 4 floor of the building. 6 flights of stairs every single day!!! man, those were the good ol' days when i had buns of titanium!
