I Came in Through the Bathroom Window Posted Wed 02 Apr, 2008 6:28 AM |
The first half of 2007 I worked as a "second secretary" in a music school. After a month or two I started taking singing lessons there. They charged me half the real price because I worked there.
In june they had to lay me off because they didn't have enough money and they didn't need an extra secretary. The ugly thing was, they didn't give me any notice: on june 1st I went to work as usual and the other secretary (not even my employers) gave me the news. While I was there talking with the other girl, my employers arrived to the school, so we had a talk and it all ended in good terms.
I continued with my singing lessons, but started paying double, the real price... Some people think I shouldn't have continued with the lessons, but I really like the classes and my coach (who is my former employer, btw).
Anyway, I just got an email from my singing coach asking me if I want my old job back, until june.
I've got a bit of pride, so the first thing I thought was NO WAY! But I really need the money. It's not much, they should actually pay more, because they're offering me the same wage I had last year, and everything is more expensive now, so the pay should be higher. But it's a three hours a day job, and it's perfect for studying. And if I add what I make tutoring, I'd be making $500 a month, which is not bad considering the amount of hours I'd have to work.
I need a 3 or 4 hours a day job so I can still go to uni, and study, and it's very hard to find one.
But still I'm not sure if I want to work with them again...
Any advice? What should I do?

Well, if you need the money and everything ended up well with them I say go for it. Would you be paying half of the price for your singing classes? If it so, once again I say GO FOR IT :o). |

I would probably say just go back to it. when you're a student you kinda have to take what you can get that will fit in with uni and studying. That was a bt crap though |

What the others said, you could always ask if it would be possible to get paid a bit more. At least you know when it's due to end this time.
If the job continues after June, make sure you have some kind of agreement of notice time. |

find out if you get a break in the singing stuff , keep an eye out for a better job and bail when you find one. They treated you a bit raw and you supported them so you owe em nothing |

I think you should go for it. If you find a better job, you should be able to quit this one without notice anyway.
Furthermore, you know the place and the people, so you don't have to get familiar with a new environment. |

Put your terms: If they offered to you again is because they trust in you, and know that you can do the job, but youve got to negociate the contract, establish a term, so you can rely on that, and not end like the last time
BTW: I was looking for a place where start taking singing classes, is expensive? |

Agree with the others. There has to be something in it for you. Get those 1/2 price singing lessons. If they won't agree to that, you have to at least ask for a "cost of living" raise to keep up with inflation. Secretaries are dumped on so much, you have to stand up for what you deserve. |

Thanks a lot, guys!
I think I'm going to take it, and like Ric said, keep looking for a better job, an internship or something.
I'll try to ask them about the price of my singing lessons, but I'm so shy I don't know if I'll be able to do it.
Gerar, if you take privet classes it costs $120, if you join a singing workshop (taller grupal de canto?) it costs $70. I think xD. |

If you are too shy to ask, then write it in a letter. That's what I do. |

So, I talked with my singing coach today and I'm starting on monday... I didn't talk about the price of my lessons, I'm a coward. But since I have to pay her next class, maybe I'll be able to bring it up. |

bring it up like this:
"oh since i'm working here again i can use my employee discount right?" haha make it seem like there is the option of saying no when really there isn't! ;)
p.s. congratulations! :) |
