Hi folks,

I need a bit help.

What is the pattern "not the least reason being that" used for and what exactly does it mean? I'm asking this because I'm suffering from understanding a crucial sentence in the homework reader. That goes like:"The colonists decided that their contracts with their investors were not valid, not the least reason being that the promised land grants for New England were incomplete."

Well, basically it means 'because'. I don't really like the way the sentence is worded, it sounds a bit messy. I'd have put "...were not valid, not least because the promised land...". The 'not least' kinda means 'not the least important reason being...'. It's just a weird way around of saying its an important reason, lol. Anyways, I've probably just confused you even more. :p
