For those of us who were too busy watching "Executive Decision" instead of highbrow docu tv, whats the scoop on wasted nation? Who should be we culling now? |

It's about problem drinking, isn't it?
We have a similar situation here in Finland. The tax on alcohol was lowered a coupe of years ago to battle floods of cheap booze from Estonia. The end result is that people drink even more than before (and still import some of their drink). The tax was rised first of January, and there is talk about even higher taxes since it didn't have any effect.
Finns traditionally drink a bottle of vodka on Friday/Saturday and then maybe stab a friend – we don't go out looking for fights and attacking strangers. There was a campaign to import more "European" drinking style, i.e. a bit of wine with meals, but the end result was a combination culture; a little bit (or a bit more) of wine all week AND the bottle of vodka at the weekend... The end result is disasterious for general health etc.
I found this about the program:

Well it's a very complex problem - drink, culture, social deprivation, up bringing, genes.... It makes me so sad and angry to hear the Glasgow is the worst city in Europe for gang fights and stabbings. Ok, every major city has this kind of problem but this is just awful and it is getting worse rather than better. |

I suppose Glasgow has a bit of a reputation, hence the term Glasgow kiss. |

it's always seemed to me that the northern you go in Europe the more you see excessive drinking...even in France the southern part of the country appears to drink less than the northern part. It is very badly considered to be totally pissed and sick in the street for example or at a party or a wedding over here, when binge/street drinking occurs more often in places like Rennes and I have seen totally hammered guests at weddings in England. |

Ah. now there's an initiative I can get behind.
I can't stand the UK drinking culture. While I'll admit to being party to it as a student, back when I thought it was hilarious. I now can't stand it. I'd much more prefer a cafe culture Euro friendly way of relaxing with some wine over a meal. I was in Lyon & Nice over the summer last year and it was so relaxed. No yobs, no louts, no sick, no police, no crowds, no violence, no fighting all from over indulgence in drink.
Can't see any way of combatting it. It appears to be engrained in our culture, for better or for worse. |

Hmmm, I agree up to a certain point but I feel you can get absolutely wasted and still behave, I for one frequently do, however, when it's mixed with testosterone filled wide boys who think they have to prove their manhood by tackling someone usually at a ratio of about 6 against 1 it tends to annoy me, or when they party well into the night, for example the lads in the house had an impromtu BBQ a couple of weeks ago, it actually started around 1:30 in the afternoon and was finished outside for 8:00 even though all we did was turn the music down and move inside I felt it was much more civilized, and we were very aware it was a Sunday night and the neighbours had young kids etc.
