Don't think there's been much discussion on it, but whats the thoughts on the use of the 'Mad as Hell' quote from Network? It opens the show, so some thought has gone into it's selection, it's placement and it's meaning.
On the face of it, the quote is about frustration at the world, and feeling a lack of impetus to be able to do anything about it. Is this along the lines of where the album is at maybe? This is more akin to the feeling that surrounded 12 memories than any other album. However, is there a subtle difference? Where 12 Memories seemed to have a political agenda, maybe this time we'll just get the primal scream of anger at the world. i.e. rather than getting the protest song and a cause to fight against, we get the paranoia and futility I guess, makin it that bit more ambiguous and maybe more personal in a way?
Just thinkin out loud here
Also, since there is no talking between numbers what do we think the reason is behind that? Could we be on course for a 'conept' (hate that term) album? Is this some sort of final tracklisting? Is this really a dry run of how it will sound? Normally when Travis tour, we get to hear the stories behind the song, and how it came to be in existance. This time, are we waiting to find out the story behind the album as a whole maybe and not just the individual songs? Could Travis be about to release their 'opus'. haha!
Again, just thinking out loud. I should maybe call this the 'conspiracies' thread. |

See "things you hate right now" for my feelings on my job today.
I'm just trying to bring together all the thoughts on what we've heard so far. There's a lot of threads about individual songs & vids and thoughts on how each sounded. I'm just trying to step back and look at the bigger picture to see what we might be getting.
Plus I'm bored. |

I like your thinking, Moray.
I posted a while back in G-Chat that I was totally digging the feel of how Abbey Road melts "Golden Slumbers," "Carry That Weight" and "The End" together. It would be so cool if Travis did something like that with album #6! |

Wow, that was deep indeed. I'm glad you wrote it,cause I wouldn't know how to with my shabby English-vocabulary, lol! I've been thinking the same things though. Difficult to say anything yet I guess. But I agree with what someone said in another post - these are exiting times to be a Travis-fan.
I'm desperate for a release date now so I know when to excpext a tour ;-) I'm dying to hear the new material! |

Love the string of medleys on the second half of that album (well, I love the whole album to be fair). If Travis' new'un ends up anything like Abbey Road, I'll be in musical heaven. |

They play that movie clip on the big screen during Red Wing games sometimes to get everyone up and screaming. :) |

Here's my theory
Ode to J.Smith
I think it means Remembering John Smith. The intro with the man going mad signifies how society is changing and how the average man (John Smith being the most common name) is changing too. The merch such as the white booklet looked like it was from church with it's preying hands and and "order of service on the front" (Hyms booklet?). Also the t-shirt has wings on it (possibly angel wings) - this could signify the death of John Smith.
Ode also refers to a lengthy poem, so the whole album could be emotions and experiences felt by the average man. The last song with the gong had a sort of reflective approach, looking back into the past so its almost as if the album tracklist is chronological in time of a persons life,
Basically experiences and emotions that everyone feels.
so as you said about the concept album, totally agree with you. When Travis recorded the Beatles' Rita they uncovered inspiration to just progress through the album making process really quickly, and Sgt Peppers is a concept album too.
Love the new material! :D |

Didn't know that about the hymn books or the angel wings on the t-shirt. Very interesting and it all fits
Ode to the average man also works well with the Network quote - after all that is aimed at getting the faceless massess (the John Smiths if you like) to stand up and to stand out. |

So, Fran wearing the black arm band would fit, too, aye? Like mourning? This was brought up after the first night, but I questioned it because the band was on his right arm. (It is my understanding that mourning bands are always worn on the left sleeve.) The other gigs it is on the left, though. |

Yes, it all fits now! The black armband, the prayer songsheet, the t-shirt, "Ode To J. Smith" and also the reason why Fran posted this picture of John Keats Death Mask in his blog. If you don't know, John Keats is one of the most important poets / writers of Odes ever. (Which relates back to "Ode To J. Smith")
I always wondered why he posted that picture, and now it's suddenly clicked!
It seems that Fran has been doing some research, and reading poetry.
For the next album, it looks like we're going to a funeral.
(Except the sound is loud enough to wake the dead and make them dance..) |

Some really good points made. A few i've thought myself too. Travis have always been great but i sense that something has happened. I mean, these new songs are incredible. They're so different to the stuff we've heard before. Friends is probably the only 'normal' sounding track. I find it hard to believe that these songs have been written so quickly. I definitely think this is THE Travis album if you get what i mean. If it's promoted correctly, that includes TV performances, radio play, TV adverts, and correct choice of singles, this album could put Travis back on top. :) Musically it's just brilliant! |
