Super Bowl: What's that piece of fabric doing there?

I didn't watch Super Bowl, so I just have to settle with reading online articles for now.

It was while reading an article I noticed that the Giants players seem to have some sort of fabric coming out the hem of their shirts - does anyone know why?

But for real, it's to keep the hands dry so they can handle the ball or whatever. :)

Thanks very much for the answer. I know very little about American football even though I do try to understand what’s going on in that field. On Friday, I heard Morten Andersen on the radio, trying to explain the basic rules to the host. I think she was blonde cos even I understood what he was saying lol
