I got an email from the Travis record company today advertising Martina Topley Bird. Out of couriosity I went to see what it was all about.

http://www.martinatopleybird.com/forum/topic/listForCategory?categoryId=1623166%3ACategory%3A286

In the new forum there seems to be mainly male members and some of them Russian. Travisland has a lot of spanish speaking fans and now the threat of Finns, too. ;^) I know there are some Russians here, too, among other nationalities, but as far as I know, only Argentinians really have their own language threads

I wonder how these fan groups develop, and why some bands are more popular in one country rather than in another?

I can't say for sure, but I think some of it comes down to radio play. In the US, Travis does not get a lot of radio play. Like hardly any. There is one radio station that plays Travis where I live and it is based in Canada (I live near the border). None of my friends have ever heard of Travis.

I think it's a matter of organization. Argentinian fans here are very well organized and enthusiastic (and really nice people too), but I don't think Travis is more popular there than in any other country.
And just to clarify, Argentinian language is Spanish ;-)

Yes, I knew they speak Spanish, but isn't it slightly different to the Spanish spoken in Spain, for instance?
I didn't mean to offend anyone, I'm truly impressed with the Argentinian department here.
The men in my house wear Argentina football t-shirts and saw quite a lot of trouble in getting them. Most days there's at least one shirt visible here :^)

I think more than anything it's the fact that last year was the first time Travis had ever played in Argentina. A lot of countries that don't see a lot of concert traffic tend to be more enthusiastic. Shoot, I would too if my favorite band finally decided to come to my country.

i just can say in germany they are well known in th "underground". means theyre not at music television that much (only if a new singles out .. then they show it few times) .. but the concerts are often sold out.
so. here are a few fans.

maybe its because of the internet stuff. i mean maybe there ARE fans but just not online here..?!

Don't worry, I know you didn't mean to offend anyone (actually, I'm not Argentinian) My point was that sometimes 5 people make more noise than a crowd. And as ElspethOllie pointed out, the recent Travis concerts in Latin America encouraged their fans to be more visible.

The show last year deffinitely encouraged more people to come and post (that's my case, haha!)! But it's not true that Argentinians or people from Latin America in general are more enthusiastic because we don't get many gigs. Local artists who play here all the time get as much emotion as the international ones that don't usually come. I think it's just the way we feel the music, we feel the need to express ourselves by singing our lungs out, jumping, dancing, clapping all the time...

Travis' songs are rarelly played on the radio here. The music channels only played Closer of all the singles from TBWNN, some of them played Selfish Jean a couple of times, but that's it.

And I recall many posts in spanish between Argentinians and south americans fans way before the album got released and the new board arrived.

Yes, I agree with Ale.
Latin fans are enthusiastic with bands that play in our countries all the time or that come for the first time.
Of course, in this particular case, a lot of people started posting in the forum once we found out Travis was coming, or after the gig, but many of us were here before that. For example, I joined the forum in 2004 :o)
