Due to the funeral thread I've been fucking around on you tube and I inevitablly ended up listening to Bagpipe tunes...

When I hear Bagpipes be it on the telly or radio or even more so live...depending on the circumstances I feel immense pride or I get a lump in my throat. I've often heard them described as derogatory, "a cat being strangled" etc. but to me they are something special. I would almost say.. instinctive or feral, they just get ye !!! although I've heard Uillean Pipes, Spanish Pipes even Egyptian Pipes but none of them get me in the same way,

Is it actually a feeling stirred deep inside or is it a product of upbringing, am I proud or am I clinging on to something, Are there other nations who hear an instrument or sound (as a nation) which stirs the such an emotion ??

Here's Finland's national instrument, Kantele, played by an expert.

It's not anything like bagpipes, not heard a lot, and its sound doesn't move me as such.
We have one untuned kantele in my family's summer place, and I used to mess around with it as a kid, but never considered learning to play. Kids usually start with a 5 string one

While it may not be as stirring or whatever...

even just listening to the first few bars reminds me of Tubular Bells (once it gets going) and to an even greater extent
this guy which is probably even more derivitive...

Nice!

That Finnish tune was made famous in the 70's by Piirpauke

and here's the more typical modern day Finnish approach: by the Sentenced. Heavy metal is our new national tune…
