... which ones do you think should have been released, which weren't.
I'd say:
Pipe Dreams,
Somewhere Else (instead of The Beautiful Occupation),
Battleships,
Eyes Wide Open,
Last Words (instead of Something Anything) and
Quite Free (instead of Song To Self). |

I actually think that Travis is a band that chooses singles very well. Better than most bands out there. They're not necessarily my favourite songs off each album, but they all really work as singles.
So I can't think of any songs that shouldn't have been singles for me... maybe it has to do with the fact that it's 3:30 in the morning and I've been working all day so my brain's kind of fried, but I honestly can't think of any. I'll give it a try tomorrow. :oP |

I'd say they should've released a fourth single from TIB, probably Follow The Light or Pipe Dreams. Maybe they were planning to until Neil's accident.
Other than that I reckon chucking more singles out would've been a waste of time and money, considering how only their first release from each album (after TIB) seems to achieve any real commercial success. |

Definately As You Are and Pipe Dreams. I'd include BYWY and Quite Free from Ode and possibly Battleships and Quicksand. There are sooo many others though. It's tough to cut down the list. |

Great choices everyone. I did think As You Are too because it's an amazing song, but i don't know if it's right as a single.

I agree with that. I do think those 3 i mentioned weren't the best choices as singles (especially considering the other possible choices) but considering that's out of over 20 singles, that's not bad at all. Better than most bands. :)

You have a point, but you also have to compare the promotion of Closer to My Eyes, for example. They just released My Eyes without promoting it in any way. Wasn't it also given away free in the Daily Mail or something. I think it was. |

agree with last words, favorite song off ode to J. Smith, um humpty dumpty love song, also agree with somewhere else, and battleships.
otherwise they do a good job choosing their singles. |

Yeah, certainly promotion has a huge part to play, as we've harked on about many times before on this board lol. So I suppose I'm saying I don't think more singles would've been a good idea unless they really got their weight behind them. Even then though, I don't know the business/practical side of it all: putting all their weight behind it probably means putting lots of money into it, and that's only sensible if they see some sort of worthwhile return on it. I'd guess that releasing 4 or 5 singles from Ode for example is a bit like heavy gambling - you're hoping one of the songs finally strikes a chord with people and gets them buying the album in their droves, or else it's lots of money, time and effort down the drain. |
