...according to me. Please post your favourites as well!
So yesterday afternoon I spent a while pretending I was a music journalist and trying to decide the best songs of 2009. I had a great afternoon glued to Spotify and ended up with this list, which I thought I might as well post here. I've bunged them into a Spotify playlist for ease of listening or linked to them individually for the three non-Spotify tunes.
It would be great to hear what your favourite tracks from this year were - I don't care if you suggest fifty or just one.
1) Mesh-29 - Electric Driven Mind
2) Dizzee Rascal - Bonkers
3) The Enemy - No Time For Tears
4) Jay-Z feat. Alicia Keys - Empire State of Mind
5) Arctic Monkeys - Cornerstone
6) Pet Shop Boys - Love etc.
7) Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone
8) Stornoway - Zorbing
9) White Lies - Farewell To the Fairground
10) Depeche Mode - Wrong
11) Muse - Uprising
12) Lily Allen - The Fear
13) Manic Street Preachers - Jackie Collins Existential Question Time
14) Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition
15) Noisettes - Don't Upset the Rhythm (Go Baby Go)
16) Howling Bells - Nightingale
17) Telekinesis - Coast of Carolina
18) Florence & The Machine - Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)
19) Kasabian - Underdog
20) David Gray - Nemesis

I agree with some of the songs you included ;) And thanks for the Spotify playlist (although 3 of them don't work in Spain). |

I think it's been a terrible year for music, except for Doves Kingdom of Rust.
How's you? :-)

Rather than starting a new thread, I will add this here. Just saw this list of top 10 most played songs of the decade (in the UK)
Chasing Cars is at #1, which for about 2 months I only knew as "that really good song from Grey's Anatomy that I cant get out of my head" and for some reason can always remember listening to it on a bus in Ottawa.
Also, seriously people, Take That is on here twice? And I dont think ive ever ever heard the ones by Sugarbabes or The Feeling. Nor have I ever actually heard of The Feeling

Recently I heard that the #1 song during Christmas is a big deal in the UK. I was wondering why all the fuss about which song would be #1. Here, no one really cares. I don't know that anyone pays attention to the charts any time here anymore, because there is no real Top 40 anymore. Too many genres of music. Even poor Casey Kasem didn't know what music to play anymore on his show. Is there still an AT40? I remember in 8th grade, listening to the Top 40 countdown every weekend. Then rap started taking over and the whole countdown got weird. It never really recovered, I guess. |

How's you? :-)
Mainstream music is steadily becoming worse and worse but I think that there is as much good music around, you just have to look harder. I got three albums for Christmas, the latest by Wild Beasts, Grizzly Bear and Telekinesis, and they are all fantastic albums. I thought this is an interesting article.
And I'm good thanks, I'm at uni which is great, if hard work! I'm looking forward to going back despite the exams awaiting us. How's life for you?
Kayte, the charts don't matter much here either but the Christmas number one is one of the ultimate achievements so people became angry that Simon Cowell's monkeys were ruining the tradition with their rehashed cheesiness. Therefore there was a facebook campaign which exploded across the country and in the end claimed the #1 spot for Rage Against the Machine, kind of claiming back the xmas #1 for the people.
Monica, thanks for the list, I'll have a listen later. A few of the songs (U2, Doves, Athlete) just missed out on my list, so it's good you've given them a mention! |

I agree. My parents were watching Top of the Pops on Christmas day and asking me who all the singers were and for most of them I didn't have a clue! Most acts seemed like one hit wonders to me.
It's hard work but worth it in the end. Glad you're liking it.
Life's kinda up and down at the moment, but I'm trying to be optimistic - things can only get better.
Just listening to Grizzly Bear - I like what I hear, so thanks for that. I'll check the others out too :-)

Here is the result of a vote by 6music listeners about the top songs of the year, although it must be influenced by groups of fans of certain bands it's still a good list imo.

I saw in the "In 2009 I will" thread that you're going to hospital sometime, I hope it's nothing too serious. Best of luck for the year ahead, I hope things sort out and settle down for you :) Any plans to come to Cornwall soon?
I'd definitely recommend Telekinesis for simple, good tunes. Wild Beasts on the other hand are quite weird, complicated good tunes so don't worry if you just don't get it! |

Ahh so your list is completely un-biased as you are a true "indie" fan, How many dance tracks made your list, how many heavy metal tracks made your list, How many pop tracks made your list, How many hip hop tracks made your list, how many jazz tracks mad your list, how many classical tracks made your list....
I could go on...

That list looks a bit random. I keep humming the Pet Shop Boys song though!
Sadly, my 'something serious' starts at next week's hospital appointment ... thanks for the luck :-D
I didn't get to Cornwall this Christmas which I'm sad about but I wouldn't have been able to get holiday insurance in case my health got worse. Hopefully I'll make it to Cornwall in the summer.
Wild Beasts, they're from Leeds I see or so it says on Myspace. I'll definitely try and figure them out :-)
How was your Christmas?

Absolutely not, I think I have a quite narrow musical interest. I made an effort to push out of straight guitar music but I would never make any claim to know the first thing about most of the genres you listed. I'd be interested to hear suggestions for the best tracks/pieces from any of these scenes or more if you have some in mind.

Sounds like you're not in the best of health (understatement of the year so far?) so, as I said, I hope you're back to normal soon!
I need to listen to some of my chosen songs again, I heard some of them for the first time last week when I was looking at other lists for inspiration. Hopefully that doesn't reduce my musical credibility too much :)
My Christmas was good thanks. It's the same every year but the traditions are part of the fun :) As far as I'm aware, the Mousehole lights haven't changed and we've only gained one new light - a Christmas tree shape - in the cove from a school competition to design one. That's about all I can think of really! |

Thank you. We're snowed in now, so it hasn't been the best start to the year. I see Cornwall has had a dusting of the white stuff too!
I relied on West Cornwall Photos for my Mousehole fix this year!
