My WHOLE life, I have thought that x=hug and o=kiss. It was just brought to my attention that it might be the other way around.
If I have ever put X, i just meant to hug you!!

Alright, what do you think? |

X is a kiss, with your lips scrunched up, O is a hug with your arms making a circle around the other person.

That's the way I thought it was. |

    | Isn't it the other way around? X = hug with your arms wrapped around each other and O = a kiss with errhm open mouth? |

but but x is arms embracing and o is lips puckered.
PLUS you say 'hugs and kisses' and put xoxox. It's the right order!

    | Yup, I'd always go with x as kiss, o as hug. I hate that, when you find out something you've thought for years is wrong. Kinda messes you up don't it? |

Maybe they should have made it K&H and then there'd be no confusion.

The other reason is, when I was a kid and I would get off the phone with my mom we'd make the kissy sound and then say oooooo (rhyming with too) as a hug. So, O was always hug to me.

Wikipedia says there is some confusion, but X=kiss and O=hug is the more popular view. |

I always thought it was like Kayte says: x=kiss and o=hug.
I don't really mind though, because I'm from South America, and here we do both, we hug and kiss people. :oP |

    | Yeah. X=kiss o=hug for me too. Seems to be the majority opinion. I guess that would make everyone who says that, eh, right! Right?! |

    | I've known about the x=kiss thing for a long time, but only become aware of the hug thing quite recently. I think I saw the end of one Gossip Girl episode and wondered what the xoxo meant, as in my youth it was always xxx after a signature. |

I would also say x=kiss and o=hug. However, I often write xxx after my name since I see the 'kiss' as a friendly kiss on the cheek - or am I wrong?
