I was just wondering. Some guy on youtube asked what As You Are is about and I couldn't find anything on this board about the song (I tried the search thingy). I wrote to him: "I think it's about a boy who is in love with some girl who is unattainable for him. She leads him on but she really isn't interested in him. And it seems he has always had trouble finding a girlfriend because he has low selfesteem and maybe finds himself unattractive or not normal or something? Just a thought :P" What do you think? I need to figure it out, it bothers me :P I would be very thankful for your help. |

Well, I remember that in Storytellers Fran told a story about the origins of this song. At first he thought that maybe inspiration could be traced to Nirvana's "Come as you are". But he crossed out that option. Instead, he recalls that once upon a time, when he was a kid going to visit his aunt and cousins, met a man in the train who entertained little Frannie during the trip and wrote him this poem:
"As you are now, so once was I.
Remember this as time goes by.
As I am now, soon you will be.
Remember this and pray for me"
Everybody can have an interpretation of his/her own. Maybe this will give you a different insight.
For me, it has to do with feeling alone in the world, unworthy and in the end coming to terms with the person you've become. |

Thank you so much Ana and Alex! :) Actually I've already read the book about Travis (Closer every year - The story of Travis) a month ago but I'd forgot all about it because I hadn't listened to all the songs on The Man Who until a week ago when I bought the album :D Now things make more sense :P The story about the poem is actually in the book too, embarrasing I forget things so easily :( But to me it seems like the song wasn't intentionally written based on the poem? Or maybe the text in the song shouldn't be taken as literal as I have? I like your thoughts of what the song is about, Ana :) |

Well I don't think the song is about the poem, but maybe he got some inspiration from it unconsciously. :) |
