The weather gods are smiting me

I ended up not posting about my hail storm experience last week but then something else happened on Thursday that has convinced me I have done something to offend the weather gods. Or maybe it's the glass gods, I don't know.

A week and half or so ago I was driving home from work and the closer I got to my house the darker it got. The clouds were so low and dark. It was very menacing. Suddenly it started hailing. At first it was little pebbles but then within 20 seconds or so they were golf to tennis ball size and BAM! there is a huge crack on my windshield. BANG! a crack on the other side. I was totally getting pummeled. Mind you I am on the freeway and still moving. Of course it wasn't fast but everyone around me was still driving so to stop would have definitely caused an accident. I then noticed the passenger side (see pic below) was really close to busting through and I was terrified that in about a minute this hail that was breaking my windshield would be hitting me in the face. Thankfully it stopped after maybe 2 minutes and I was right by my exit.

My windshield:

(I was waiting to turn forever when I snapped this pic so no I wasn't driving!)

You can't see it but my dashboard and seats had glass shards on them.

I got the kids and the skylights in the atrium of their daycare were busted through. On the way home (a very bumpy drive I might add due to the streets being covered in hail) I was behind a car that had tennis ball size HOLES in their back windshield. Our was covered in hail but looked OK, though we still haven't gotten the roof inspected so there might be more surprises awaiting us.

I got the windshield fixed the next day but still need to take the car to a body shop. It is covered in dings deep enough that you can stick your finger in it. We have an appt. on Tuesday so we'll see what they say.

Things had generally calmed down and I have just noticed a LOT of roofing company signs, ads for body shops, and radio ads for car dealerships having "hail sales."

Then Thursday there was a wind storm here. Winds got up to 40 mph I heard. I didn't care until Brian got home on Friday and looked in the backyard and discovered this.

I don't know exactly what happened. Why is the glass all in the middle and not by the blown over table? (not that I am complaining because the glass would have been all in the dirt and grass and even more of a nightmare to clean up) I was thinking maybe it had been pummeled by the hail and was really close to breaking so the wind making the umbrella move around a bit was too much and it just smashed and then the table blew over now that the glass wasn't weighing it down.

Regardless we just spent a really long time cleaning up the glass with brooms and a shop vac.

I don't think I can take another weather incident breaking something of mine. At least for a few weeks.

So what do you think? What might have I done to piss off the weather and/or glass gods?

Yes, you have offended the glass gods. Say three "Dale Chihuly's" and you'll be forgiven.

I guess why the table is further away from the glass is that after it blew over, the glass broke, then the table was lighter and the umbrella caught wind and blew it off the patio.

You have a sweet little yard. You could have darling garden parties. You know, if your patio wasn't covered in glass.

Aww, Ric, does Dale's eye patch scare you? We went to a Dale Chihuly exhibit at the Detroit Institute of Arts several years ago and it was the coolest thing EVER. Whoever put that thing together should have received an award. You walked down a path, but the rest of the floor was covered in little glass chips. There was all kinds of weirdo lighting and everything glistened. Each room was like being transported to another planet. It was soooo cooool! (Yes, I know all his glass is done by his assistants.)

This is soooo true.

Thanks for the compliment on my backyard. I worked my tooshie off to get it in shape. It was a hot mess when we bought the place.

Thanks to a shop vac our patio is now glass free so I can have a garden party. Kayte and Ric, you are officially invited over for tea and scones.
