Hey Fran, I have a query. :) I'm part of this student TV society at my university where we produce various videos and upload them on the web (http://lutube.tv/). I'm production manager for news and have made a couple of mini news shows (they're rubbish at the mo but we'll get better lol). However one thing we've been told not to use is copyrighted music, which rather limits us on the audio front. Unless, of course, we get permission from whoever owns the music. I was just wondering, if we wanted to use Travis music, who would we have to have permission from? I'm guessing probably you the band, but I don't know much about this copyright stuff. If so... can we use your music? :D

Also, is there a difference between independent artists and those signed up to music labels regarding ownership of music? What if we wanted to use a song written by one person and sung by another, who would we ask permission from then? Seeing as your in the industry I thought you might be a good person to ask about it!

Thankya kindly

There might be some music people around here somewhere... *gazes into crowd*

Where copyright is concerned, you'll probably need permission from the writer, the performer, the record company boss' dog and Simon Cowell (he owns the rights to almost every song in the known universe). So keep writing your own songs!

PS. The board's quiet at the moment. *hums to self vaguely*

We've got a contract with "SUISA" ... this is an organisation - in Switzerland - which allows us to use any songs we want - as long as we do it under their conditions and we have to inform them which songs we're using.
Every Radio-station, TV-Station, DJ or Coverband's gotta have a contract with them....so you're covered whatever will happen...

I'm sure something like that exist in other countries too...otherwise they'd have to ask every single artist for their permission...

It'd be cool if we had access to an organisation like that, but if one exists in the UK I don't know what its called or if we'd be eligible to have their attention. But hey, if we can't use other people's music we'll just have to make do with my dire garageband electronic beats and whatnot. It's better than silence at least. Um, maybe.... :P
