“Ode to J.Smith” (Fontana/Red Telephone Box): B+
Travis frontman Fran Healy must have a conniption every time someone says Coldplay is the greatest band on the planet, because Chris Martin and crew stole his sound. Such exasperation rears its divine head on this, the sixth album by the Brit four-piece. Fans who feel the guys had gone soft will love this. Andy Dunlop reintroduces the snarling guitars that characterized the band’s early work, creating a good feeling throughout. This beats Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” by a mile. Download: “Something Anything.” (In stores Tuesday.)

Coldplay can by no means be compared with Travis.
Chris Martin can sing the Travis song "All I want to do is rock" this way: All I want is money and fame. |

I'm fairly sure that I've never heard the word conniption before either. And I wasn't aware of Ode being angry, just louder and more to the point. |

It's a positive little review, which is great. I agree, however, that it's annoying Travis always have to be compared to Coldplay. There's no need for a comparison here, especially because Viva La Vida and Ode to J. Smith are so different. |

Haha I have never compared the two bands even though I love them both! Is there a Coldplay song that sounds like Travis and vice versa? I hate categorizing! |

Well, I mean, they DO have a similar British rock sound, but the constant comparing gets annoying. They're not that much alike. I guess it would make sense to compare some of their stuff, but it doesn’t at all with their latest albums. |

Yeah I guess you could put them in the same genre, but that's about it...Think Travis have more of a classic sound, while Coldplay is more grand.. Well maybe you could compare some stuff from Parachutes with Travis, but on the other hand not :P If you compare Viva La Vida and Side, you can hear the difference in the bands recording techniques and ambitions.
Edit: Must have been drunk when I posted this, but now I've corrected the errors ;) And yeah Travis songs are a lot more interesting then Coldplay songs. You could make disco hits out of almost every Coldplay song though ;)
Travis is like a modern Beatles. |

Linky?
Of course they'll sound similar--they're inspired by Travis. They're alright but they don't even come close. Coldplay doesn't know what a guitar solo is.
Chris is an odd bloke tho. Guess comments like below are his way of dealing with fame.
