Stupid question I know but but how do you pronounce "2002" (the year). I just can't remember. Is it like 1970 for example? First 19 hundert and then 70 or is it another rule? |

That's a good question! Now it's bothering me, too. Lol ;^) |

I only heard it pronounced 'zwei tausend zwei', 'zwei tausend acht' etc. However, this might not the case everywhere. |

some do say "zwei tausend zwei" some say "zwei tausend und zwei"
when u say: 1978 (f.i.) you either say: "neunzehnhundert acht und siebzig" (nineteenhundret seventyeight) or "tausendneunhundertachtundsiebzig" (thousend nine houndret seventyeight)...
but you can't say that "hundret-thing" with the 2002..it be 20-hundret..sounds weird, doesn't it
why the question?...it's a bit odd ;)

That's what I would have said but I wasn't sure and didn't feel like asking one of my German teachers. They are already so desperate when they realize how low is our level after 7 years of studying...

Odd? Why?
It's just that I have an oral tomorrow and couldn't remember how to pronounce years after 1999 haha.
Thanks for the answers btw! :o)

Years (dates):
2002= "Zweitausendzwei" (written in one word).
2020= "Zweitausendzwanzig"
1978="Neunzehnhundertachtundsiebzig".
a number of: years (as in "the city was founded ... years ago), people, pebblestones, ...:
2002= "zweitausendzwei" (e.g. Kieselsteinchen).
1978= "eintausendneunhundertachtundsiebzig" Kieselsteinchen (hm, I think it wouldn't be totally wrong to say "neunzehnhundertachtundsiehzig" Kieselsteinchen, but I wouldn't say that...)
Oh God, every time I think too much about my mother tongue, I get confused ;D |
